2005 Defender 110 Td5 CSW Zambezi Silver
Smokey and Slow From Low Revs
Hi,

My 2005 TD5 (70k on clock) sometimes has a distinct lack of power from low revs, it gives a bit of black smoke when it's behaving like this too. Once it gets going it goes like a train but every now and again it's rubbish at low revs.

I have replaced the MAF with a new VDO unit and it hasn't made a difference. I'll take a look at the hoses to make sure there are no splits or delamination this weekend. Anything else I should look at during these early stages?

It boosts fine so the actuator isn't stuck.

Many thanks

I think that's a pretty textbook example of a stuck actuator. No power until you really rev it up.

I'll give it a wiggle over the weekend and check it's free!

So, my actuator moves just fine with gentle persuasion and a pair of mole grips.

I haven't used the Landy for a couple of weeks as I've been unwell. I drove it 40 miles this morning and it's gutless at low revs with black smoke, once it gets going you can hear the turbo spool up and it goes just fine, holding 70mph on the motorway as usual.

Pulling off it felt like it had no power when cold, this got a little better when warm but it's still slow and smokey.

The vehicle only has 70k on the clock and only did 1k a year for 5 years before my ownership if this helps? I'm going to replace the EGR with a bypass soon incase the lack of use has gunked this up. I also have a new set of silicone intercooler hoses to put on at the same time incase they are delaminating as I gather this could also cause my issue?
