Just before Christmas the new chassis arrived from Richards Very Happy . My workshop is on a smallholding and the chassis turned up with 3 others on a trailer behind a Disco. For some reason my landlord decided he didn't want the Disco to drive up to my workshop because it would churn the mud up, instead it was dropped in the yard and he said he'd help me move it to the top. He suspended one end from his front loader and i had to carry the other end about 100 meters to the workshop, i thought my arms were going to drop off Big Cry I think he churned up more mud with his 4' tractor tyres!

I decided to paint the chassis because i prefer the look to the galvanized finish, it also makes it look less appealing to low lives.

I had a few days off over Christmas so the plan was to get to a rolling chassis. The chassis was built up with new springs, dampers, galvanised spring seats, galvanised turrets, poly bushes, new brake lines including braided flexis, and new nuts and bolts throughout, stainless where appropriate.

While there was no body work it seemed a good time to fit the engine and boxes, i dropped the engine in first then tried to join the gearbox to it. That was the start of endless pushing, shoving, twisting and swearing, but they still refused to become one. I removed the new clutch and re-fitted it, making sure it was lined up perfectly, slid the engine and box together making sure they were square, but they still wouldn't engage. This went on for far to long, checking and re-checking everything with no progress made. Then, after much head scratching, they just slid together with almost no effort. I still don't know what the problem was but it was a long, frustrating afternoon.

The engine, gearbox and transfer box were all working well before the strip down so the engine was given a good service, new timing belt, water pump, crank seals and clutch and re-installed. The gearbox and transfer box were swapped for spare ones that i already had, i'll re-build the originals and re-install them, as time allows, when the vehicle is back on the road and in use.

As i'd sold all the knackered panels i now had to source all the bodywork from the bulkhead back. I was lucky enough to find a complete TD5 rear body, back door, seat box and windscreen in good condition. It was an ex-utility body so there were lockers either side in the tub and also a pair in the upper side panels. I wanted to use one of the upper ones, but i wanted the other side plain, so i managed to get the bloke to throw in a pair of plain Puma side panels, and even got him to deliver it, all for a very reasonable price.

As the rear body was in good condition, only needing a clean and polish, i let that dictate the colour of the finished truck, leaving only the wings, bonnet, bulkhead and doors to paint. The bulkhead was in excellent condition, needing just a minor amount of welding to one footwell, it was then sent to the paintshop, followed by the rest of the panels, to be painted individually and the first one back was the bulkhead. I fitted it straight away, rather than risk it getting damaged on the workshop floor, then pumped it full of Dinitrol.

I was taking the pic. The one one the right has his own Land Rover repair business, the picture was taken in his workshop. He's a good mate to have when you have loads of Land Rover parts you need to store Very Happy

The rear bodywork came from a 55 plate and was in good condition for its age and the plan was to fit it as it was. However after getting the front end panels painted the back end didn't look quite so good so i ended up having the whole vehicle painted panel by panel. I'm happy with the end result but if i'd known at the start that i was going to paint the whole vehicle i would have chosen a different colour.

The rear bottom corners of the tub were slightly bent so i fitted chequer plate to cover the damage, i was going to use chequer plate to protect the wing tops so it would fit in with the look.

The upper panels came with lockers either side and the original plan was to use one on the passenger side but fit a blank panel on the driver side. A change of plan meant i ended up fitting plain panels either side.

Not sure? The wheels/ tyres are temporary and i'm still trying to decide between alloys and Wolfs. The alloys would have worked well with Stornaway/ Corris etc. and i think Wolfs look better in white so it would have been a colour to work with white. Now it's silver i'm not sure about the Wolfs, i don't like silver wheels so that leaves black, do black Wolfs look right or should i go for alloys?

Imo the black wolf's are not as good as the white ones as you can see more detail on them, as regard to the alloys, black is best with the colour you are going with Thumbs Up

As i had black alloys for a while and i thought that they just didnt look right, so after a long wait i finally got some black modulars, spot on i thought and suit the utility landy more Whistle

I see in one of your pic's that you have some modulars on, not your cup of tea ? 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up. Keeper.

I quite like the the modulars, i'm very happy with the BFG's and they've not done many miles so they have loads of tread left but they're 8/9 years old. At that age i need to start thinking about replacing them so that will be decision time.

Yes alot of decisions Rolling Eyes I got my modulars with tyres from a forum member and its the first time that i have not had BFG's AT's on my landy, ive got Khumo MT's 245/75/16 and i'm really impressed with the tyre's, been off road as well and didnt get stuck Thumbs Up 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up. Keeper.
