FINALLY the locking tools have arrived. So this evening I popped the head off. I foolishly assumed that being a 15p my engine would have metal dowels. Turns out that they were plastic. (Early 15p) Rolling Eyes

So a bit of head float and pistons in cyl 2, 3 and 4 have interfaced with the valves. Nothing major but there is a tiny mark in those 3 pistons Shocked

Anyway the bores look great (can still see the honing marks) and have no lip.

Looking at the gasket there are no obvious signs of gasket failure but there might not be if there has been head float.

Tomorrow I'm going to be enquiring about having the head pressure tested and hopefully start getting things back together by the and of the week Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Yeah absolutely, everything is looking very good, 130k miles on plastic dowels at near double factory output isn't too shabby. Shows that I drive it like Miss Daisy Rolling with laughter 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Well, things are not as dandy as they first appeared Crying or Very sad

Today, I decided to clean up the head in preparation for having it pressure tested. In removing the carbon and stuck gasket material the true extent of the problem showed itself. The head float has been so extreme and (it would appear) has been going on for quite some time as the head is actually burred around cyl 3, 4 and 5 Shocked

To make matters worse, my local landrover dealer has sent out the wrong parts Big Cry

So I'm going to be replacing with an AMC head. Hopefully I can get it all done before my trip to the Nürburg Ring in September Shocked

At least that's made the decision for you, yeah its a pain when that happens with the wrong parts. I was given the wrong locking tool for the bottom end. So when it came to doing the timing belt, things were not right.

Plastic head dowels Procta. Very common for them to break, allowing the head to move and cause the above damage. Brilliant idea from landrover Rolling Eyes 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

The early (10p) engines were renown for head gaskets running standard. The 15P (circa 2002)engines should have metal dowels to stop the head moving around, should it lift. Unfortunately, and not surprising the Lanrdover employee used the whats at hand approach when building Georges engine Rolling Eyes coupled with his extras Laughing its proved costly. However with the need for another Head, another modification can be made

New AMC head ordered from Wards Engineering, my valve gear will be going in and I'm having solid metal dowels turned to make sure this never happens again!

They have assured me that it will be with me before the end of next week. Looks like the Nürburg Ring is still on Whistle 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

I am sure the k series engine had a similar problem with the dowels. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back
