I'm still waiting for the engine locking tools to arrive - whilst the defender is out of action I have decided to strip the dash out for another modification. I'll pop a picture up and see if you can guess what it is Whistle

P.s the wiring is temporary for testing purposes Thumbs Up

My advice on Head gasket failure, is expect it to go over budget, and also investigate why its failed. Also do those jobs that you can get to while the head is off.
Engine looks clean, so you may have caught it nice and early. Are you going for a performance head? Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

I don't really have a budget, I'll spend wherever needs spending to get it right. I'm already planning new timing chain and all gaskets. Also an injector overhaul whilst it's apart.

Until the head comes off I won't know for sure but I think the head might be cracked (which is fairly common on Td5s) if it is then I'll be putting an AMC head on. If not then it'll be the gasket and further investigation. My guess is (if it is the gasket) that excessive EGT may have caused the initial problem. (Probably caused by sustained load towing heavy things up big hills Laughing )

Also if the standard head is to remain then I'll be slightly porting it Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

If you don't have a budget, then I would just go for the Head upgrade. While you have the option Thumbs Up I did toy with the idea with the rover metro i had, but i would have had to wait for a year, no way was i going to wait that long! Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

I might well do, however if I can get away with a gasket and mild porting then that'll suffice. Another consideration is time. I'd want to buy a plain head and have my valve train put in as I know it's in great condition. However I've got a trip planned to the Nürburg Ring in early September so want to get it done for then Whistle

It has been known to tow the odd thing Jim, but is obviously well polished whilst doing so Laughing

Glad the blue one is safe Thumbs Up how was the weekend? Did you get it up? Rolling with laughter 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Not a rain sensor, maybe a picture of the prototype wheel boxes and link rod will give the game away Whistle

I've been planning it for a while, it happens that as its off the road now is the ideal time to do it. I've not yet seen the latest Project Binky episode, from what you've said I might have to watch it now Whistle 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon
