Poor Starting
My 06 Td5 has become increasingly difficult to start after having stood for anywhere from 2hrs or more.

Initially it was firing then dying, requiring a but of quick cranking to get it going again. It's got steadily worse now to the point this morning it wouldn't even fire until id cranked it for a good 15-20seconds or so. It seems worse when the weather is cold but it's also happened on a warm day so I was kind of ruling out glow plugs.

I know the FPR is weeping a bit so I was suspecting that may be at fault allowing air into the system. If I'm getting that swapped at a local indi I was thinking it wouldn't hurt to get the injector seals done at the same time.

Obviously I don't just want to throw parts and money at it but this seemed the most likely to.me unless anyone can think of alternatives?

The car started playing up like this around this time last year but not this bad. The FPR has been leaking since then so I cant rule it out. The only thing I changed last year was the fuel filter head but that seemed to make minimal difference.

Cheers

1. fuel presser regulator to start with as it will lower fuel presser to the injectors and fuel can drain away from the injector so you have to prime the fuel galley each time Exclamation

2. injector seals i.e. o ring and copper washers

3. oil in the injector loom and red ecu plug ?

also fuel presser regulator leaking 90% of the time it this see link below

Sorry just saw your update.

Interesting idea just replacing the diaphragm unit... That's worth a go to start with! Job doesn't look to hard, may give it a go myself.

Fitted the rebuild kit today. Some of the o-rings were split on the regulator unit so that probably explains the leak. I have to say its actually made a significant difference to how it drives, seems much punchier again now. Wondering if the diaphragm had been letting go resulting in low fuel pressure maybe?

Anyway it doesn't seem to have cured the starting issue. If I leave the car for any period of time it still sounds like its glugging air through. The pump whines for the first few seconds, then gluggs, then starts to sound better. If I put my ear next to the FPR it sounds like its drawing aerated fuel through as you can hear it bubbling through almost.

I cant see any leaks around the filter where it has weeped in the past and besides I changed the filter head only a year ago. Surely if the NRV in the head had gone it wouldn't draw air through?

All that leaves me with is injector seals isn't it? Struggling to think what else. ...

Is your filter head in good sharp, can get badly corroded, also air bled valve in the filter head

WJN500110 - VALVE AIR BLEED FUEL SYSTEM TD5 DEFENDER - See more at: http://www.brit-car.co.uk/product.php/1349...C875k.dpuf

but your injector seal would be next port of call not too hard job you will have too get tools and parts to ether link below will shown you work involved to replace the seals

Filter head is in good shape. It was replaced with a new genuine part last year. From memory it came with new bleed and non return valves in the unions so id be surprised if that's gone already. .

Hmmm not a huge trip, I got it up to temperature on a run down the motorway and back but that was probably only 10mins or so.

I'll try a longer run then I think my plan will be to take off the union on the filter head with the air bleed valve and check it looks ok and refit. Then its injector seals. Reading up on the job I think that's something ill take to a specialist given I dont have much of the kit needed to do it properly...

Unless anyone can think of anything else to try?

Thanks for all the help so far!

Christ just saw the proper removal tool is £111 from dingocroft! Is there a cheaper version? Wouldn't attempt this without a slide hammer type tool...
