Switzerland 2015 Defender 90 Puma 2.2 Heritage Edition SW Grasmere Green
Well, I guess that the switch on is based on the increased voltage given by the alternator with engine running vs battery at rest.

Probably means that they will not work with a failure of the charging system?

And, will they come on with if you connect a charger (CTEK) to top up the battery?

Hello All

Finally got around to installing my DRL's (Lyra Dual Function Day - Night Lamps (BRL0398)

Apparently simple enough... Thumbs Up ...but Not working as expected... Shocked

I'd appreciate any thoughts from those who know something about DRL's and how they work
(or general electrickery...) from the following description...

These lights work 'in-line' with the OP (original post) they remain working (in a different mode)
when the side lights or headlights are in operation.

They have two basic modes of operation...
1. High intensity Day Time running (when no other lights are in operation)
2. Low intensity Night Time running (or Day Time...but when the Side Lights or dipped / main beam
Headlights are in operation).

There is also a change in the projected length / throw of the DRL light beams...



I wired these into the Defender 'exactly' as per the instructions. (The only change was to extend the + and - wires provided, as the 'loom' wouldn't reach the Battery location on a Land Rover...this kit assumes a normal under bonnet battery location).

White (1) = + (12V Supply)
Black (3) = - (Earth)
Yellow (D)= Side Light (Switching Circuit)

So what have I got... Question
Turn Engine On and DRL's illuminate in their Day Time (High) mode...

Within 1 minute one DRL goes out...

Within a further 10-15 Seconds, the second DRL goes out...

Turn the Engine Off then On again...back to...

Turn on the Side Lights and the DRL's switch to their Night Time (Low) mode...

Where exactly have you made the three connections? First thought is that you've somehow earthed it to the same circuit as the interior lights and so they're going out in time with those lights dimming. Darren

Good thought...but no...(i'm fairly sure)

To answer your question
Both the Positive and Negative Wires are run directly back to the Battery and connected via a Blue Sea Terminal Kit (providing 4 fused + 'additions' and 4 Earthing Point - 'additions')

The 3rd Wire (Yellow on this kit) is connected to the + Side Feed for the Side Lights.

Not relevant to your Question but here is the support bracket I made to mount the lights behind the Front Grill
(so that everything stays in place when its removed).

My understanding of DRL's is that they can be controlled 'simply' by an Automated ON - OFF Controller
(DRL's ON when all lights are OFF / DRL's OFF when either Side or Headlights are ON)

These 'Controllers' can be obtained separately...

With a Controller claiming to work in the same manner (providing a 50% dimming function for Night time use)

I don't want to give up on mine just yet, and intend to ask the Manufactures / Suppliers if they recognised
my current Operating Circumstances...but potentially I could try and rewire these to be just ON or OFF in High Intensity mode (using a Controller as linked to above)...but I want to progress this currently to try and find a fix or work around and make these work as intended.

Been in contact with Ring Automotive and received the following reply...

'The Lyra unit has a built in countdown controller.
If the unit “sees” the alternator working, it resets the countdown and the lights stay “on”.
If it doesn’t see the electrical noise from the alternator then it will countdown and switch “off”.'


A free issue replacement set of DRL's are on their way...if they also don't work as intended then it has has been suggested that my wiring may be the issue (to Ring's credit, they have accepted from my description that I do look to have wired these correctly).

I know companies change and the quality control of products goes can go down as well as up...but I have a set of Ring Spot lights form the 1980's that work perfectly, Glass is 'aged' but clear, seals are intact and have seen 30+ winters.

First I would suggest people consider the wording on their motor insurance policy. Most if not ALL motor insurance policy would have a clause stating something like it is the policy holders responsibility to ensure that the vehicle is kept road legal/road worthy/MOT etc. If you do not the insurance company can void the policy.


Now going into great detail on DRL you would have to go and study the UNECE 48 and 87.

However the Transport Department has brought out a much simplified guide HERE

Now

Quote:


Vehicles fitted with DRLs which do not meet the above requirements are
treated as not roadworthy and may fail in the vehicle examination.




Apart from actual dimensions of position of DRL's they state how they should operate and position of DRL's

Also it states quite clearly that ONLY 2 DRL's are permitted.

Therefore those who are supplying, fitting and using quad DRL's are committing an offence under section 77 of the RTA.

Received a replacement set of DRLs from Ring...and all is now OK.

Original set were faulty not 'seeing' the Electrical Noise correctly from the Alternator
and switching OFF.

Now they work as intended, I've also noticed the DRL's remain illuminated for 10-15 seconds
after the engine is switched OFF...possibly a 'get me home safe' function (un-documented).

Anyway...now i'll see how long they last...

The lights are a safety feature to highlight the visibility of a moving vehicle on the road, not as a spot or fog light
in the UK and europe the Day light running lights are on ‘bright’ when the lights are off and on a ‘dim’ setting when the side lights come on, so it you have Day light bulbs in the side lights you need a controller to dip them when the main bea comes on..

There are kits that do that that but its often better to have the lights wired independently as the wiring in is simpler, (just a run to the battery and to a side light)

Their purpose is to help other drivers who don’t notice a couple of tonne of vehicle driving on road, normally due to the other drivers being on their phones looking at Facebook whilst driving. It also helps with the fact that due to removal of sense, and the growth of laziness, people no longer know how to turn their lights on (too used to auto lights), so drive in heavy rain and fog with zero lights. Although on many cars now the DLRs are so bright you can’t see the indicators, so now we have DLRs that cancel oneside when indicator is used.

Whilst moaning about people's poor driving. DRL's seem to stop people realising in poor visabilty they have DRL's on the front but NO lights on at the rear!!

If a DRL is close to an indicator it should either switch off or dim down on the side of the indicator working as that is a legal requirement.


DRl too bright for indicator or driver not indicating?

Retro fit DRLs can be a nightmare as people buy illegal ones, badly fit them and have people wiring them up as side lights! That is completely illegal.

On a Defender turn ignition key with left hand, hit light stalk with left thumb, job done.
