what to look for.....
about to buy a 200TDi, and I'm keen to have this particular one. Given that, what are the key elements to look for that will be very expensive to replace/fix?

I know about bulkhead and cross member and outrigger rot, and rot in general.

What key things should I check for (and ideally, how)?

Check for leaks.

When in it cold, put it into 1st then second then back again. Should be nice and smooth, if its very notchy or a bit of a struggle can indicate a worn box.

Check the vin and vehicle history to make sure its not been altered or fiddled with.

Black smoke on start-up is normal and should clear immediately, white smoke can be a sign of a cracked head which is rare but I can assure you a nightmare to sort as you cant get the heads from anywhere.

As you have said, rot can be expensive to sort but mostly its labour intensive.

Other than that they are the best vintage Land Rovers they ever made so should go on forever! Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

If it's a 200tdi
Just make sure oil isn't creamy as 200 heads are hard to find.
Have to say my old 200tdi was prob most reliable defender I had ,
Check gears all engage and disengage
Look for steering box play and leak
Tbox and diff lock works
And clutch doesn't judder
But none of these will pup me off buying ,even if these have issues they are all repairable easy enough.
Biggest expense would be as you already know is rot of chassis and bulkhead, Have fun be happy
