Hello you 18 inchers
Just wondering what size/brand of winter tyre you're planning to shoe your wheels with this year? I'm running Bowler 18" with 265/65 BFGs. Thinking Hakkapeliittas, but curious as to what size people have chosen or had recommended? Alternatively, anyone know what the minimum width of tyre it's possible to fit on a Bowler 18" rim? Nokian do a Hakkapaileatttttaaabsggetebhta (What a name) in 225/55/R18 which appeals for obvious benefit of a slimmer width... Cheers all  Monsieur Le Grenadier

They're 8" wide rims.
Coopers list 225, 235 and 245 tyre widths for 8" wide rims but that will depend on the exact tyre you're choosing. I realise this isn't the tyre you want, but it's an example of a 225/55R18 that lists 18x8 as a potential rim: http://www.coopertire.co.uk/tyres/high-per...-4xs-sport 225/55 is only a 28" tyre though, that's small for a Defender. 235/60R18 is an option too, that gains you another inch: http://www.coopertire.co.uk/tyres/high-per...verer-m-s2 or 235/65 which comes to 30": http://www.coopertire.co.uk/tyres/high-per...master-wsc Edit: one of the Nokian winter tyres is available in 235/86R18. |

Thanks for that Cupboard. I'd agree, the 55 seemed small. The correct Nokian is available but effing expensive. Almost 300€ each. Given I don't need studs/spikes, given I won't be going properly off road, I'm not sure why I need the Nokian Verylongname. Continental (who's road types have won the last few awards and I've just bought for my wife's TT) have a tyre at 235/65 which seem a nice balance of having the same wall height but narrower profile and for half the money. 90% of my winter driving here will be in very cold roads, occasionally with some light snow or packed snow (Down driveways etc) but mainly tarmac. Indeed I would say cold wet roads at either shoulder of the season would be more common than snow covered roads and that is where the Contis excel. What do we all think? Monsieur Le Grenadier

As you said that deep fresh snow isn't the main issue, don't automatically assume that a narrow tyre is better for slippy wet and icy roads......

I believe you're running the KO2's which carry the Snowflake so aren't they a 'winter tyre'? James

Agreed. I know thin works best in snow, but the advantage I think the 235 offers a balance between too much contact patch in snow and not enough on tarmac. I'd certainly listen to Conti, might touch base... Monsieur Le Grenadier

They are Pirelli scorpions as well. Which I find to be great in the wet. Not sure if they are winter marked will have to check

 you find them that bad?? I'm sure I've read somewhere that they've got the best wet road rating in its class.
I always thought my Ko2's were bloody good in the wet, way better than the gg at2's I previously had. Mind you they are 235 85 16's, not 18's |

Really not a fan at all. Compared with the Cooper ST Maxx I had on my last SW, I really dislike the BFGs. More slippy on damp/wet roads, less general feedback, don't like the look (if that matters) etc etc. I appreciate I'm not driving a Caterham but the sooner I can get back to the ST Maxx, the better. Having said that, if they're snowflake that's a (euro saving) bonus, but there's not one thing that I prefer about them than the Coopers.

Hmm interesting, do you find the st maxx any louder on the Tarmac than the Bfg? Now I've had to have quick google, seems a there's a lot of high praise for the st maxx, only down fall is apparently slightly noisier on the road.

Actually, window open they probably are. But without sounding a bit odd, it's a comforting hum. Given the wind, stereo and all other noises it's not so different as to be a hardship. But thanks to JOW for pointing out the Snowflake on my BFGs, looks like I'm keeping them. Saves me a grand which can go towards other bits. Ha, ha, ha. Not if SWMBO has her way!!
