United Kingdom 2003 Defender 90 Td5 XS CSW Indus Silver
Bad MAF
My 2003 Defender 90 was struggling when accelerating, and after reading many an advice here, I decided to try and unplug the MAF power supply.
The acceleration was immediately improved, the engine smoother.
Now I am keeping an eye on the fuel consumption to see if that improves as well.

In the meantime I'm wondering what are the possible issues of not having a MAF at all, as opposed to replacing it.
Any ideas on the pros and cons?

It'll take me about a week to find out about the fuel, after that I will decide.

Btw there are no other mods to the engine.

Alex

You will find that it's a bit gutless without a MAF at low revs. For example mine would reverse off our steep drive on tickover with a working MAF, but wouldn't with either a faulty MAF or with it unplugged. In fact that was always the first indication that the MAF was starting to fail.

The general advice is do not waste money on a cheap MAF - get a proper OEM version from a reputable supplier. Dave

It's not a financial issue TIGER, it's curiosity to know what are the advantages and disadvantages on not having a MAF.
I will get a new good quality one as soon as I am done with my silly curiosity...

NOSNIBOD has given one disadvantage: gutless at low rev... I will look for that, thank you.

I found that there is a bigger difference between a bad MAF and No MAF then there is between a good MAF and no MAF. Twisted Evil
And somewhere in between you have a working MAF that doesn't give the right values. Roel
