England 2012 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 USW Orkney Grey
oil pump failure 2012 2.2 TDCi
First posting on this forum.....Long storey short. We broke down in France 2 months ago now....complete loss of power at 70mph in the outside lane of the motorway!! Somehow managed to get the Landy onto the hard shoulder without hitting anything!! NFU breakdown insurance was fantastic and we were home in just over 24 hours but Landy took a bit longer (about 5 weeks). Once home my local and trusted 4x4 specialist diognosed oil pump failure which has totally wrecked the whole engine!! Turns out there is a Q421 recall on the oil pump on my model/VIN number. As only a service action recall the customer is not informed!! So Landy now been at Hunters Landrover for over a week getting examined and tested....we are awaiting the outcome?!

Landy is out of warranty but has full service history (but not from landrover), was bought six months old as an approved landrover. Not sure what the outcome of Landrovers examination and testing will be? But has anyone else had a similar experience?

Thanks Harry

I presume as a approved Land Rover, You mean you bought from a dealer?... If so, the dealer should have done the recall before selling it on.. Or as part of the PDI pre hand over....

Was bought from a Landrover dealer in Oxford in November 2012 so the recall wasn't even thought about then! But obviously the original oil pump was in the Landy when I bought it.

Unfortunately, I had to pester my dealer into getting the oil pump recall done... However, To be fair. I was the first in the queue at the dealers as LR "didn't have a issue with all the TDCi engine failures"... Well that is until they did.....

Good luck mate...

Thanks for posting that. Mine's a '12 110 and just turned over 20,000 miles (I've had her a year and done 2,000 of them)

I've just spoken to the L-R dealer where she'd had her servicing done prior to my ownership and, thankfully, all recalls are up to date. Thumbs Up

If the Defender was never been back to a dealer then it wouldn't of ever been picked up, they are service actions NOT recalls.

What work was done by the local specialist to determine the extent of the damage before being shipped of to the dealer.

Yes you're absolutely right it is a service action that LR don't have to write to owners about, if it had been main dealer serviced then yes it would have been picked up....but surely if something like an oil pump fails with such serious damage being caused to the whole engine and turbo - it should be a safety recall with all owners notified!!

The local 4x4 specialist took the top off the engine to investigate why the engine was seized solid and further investigation once they got the engine out of the vehicle was that the splines on the oil pump and completely broken up and were now dispursed through the engine.

The main dealer has now done tests on the oil used in the vehicle and sent off the oil filter for testing. They came back to me on Friday to say "yes we agree the only cure is a new engine". I am now waiting for customer services to come back to me with a proposal for the repairs required.

I didn't take out the extended warranty option on the basis that if reasonably large items such as the gear box or the turbo went etc...I could afford to pay for the repairs. But never imagined on a 4 year old vehicle the whole engine could need replacing!!

Hi all, also just joined the site so unable to pm yet but having a very similar problem as Harry and would be very keen to hear what Landrover say with regards to the recall on the oil pump. My 2012 2.2 XS oil pressure warning light came on 7 days ago followed very quickly by limp home and then engine siezed. Upon further inspection turbo is shot and engine had seized although have been able to get moving again so not completely seized. Garage is going to try blocking off turbo to see if the oil pump is also goosed but I suspect strongly it has. Coincidentally the intercooler to throttle body turbo hose had also burst only weeks ago. As far as I have been able to ascertain it never had the pump replaced although has a full service history. I will be contacting Landrover tomorrow to see where it might lead but am preparing for the inevitable and would appreciate anyones thoughts one where to obtain a reconned turbo unit. Also with regards to the engine can anyone recomend a reliable place to purchase a similar age of engine assuming we cant save her ( unlikely I know ).

I have bought a 2012 puma 2.2 from a Jeep garage. It was a part ex. It is in the vin range for this recall.
What's best way to find out if the work was done?
It is low mileage 22k but was serviced annually some by LR.
I think I have the previous owners address on logbook.
Secondly, is there a database held by LR logging those cars that had the work done?
A quick vin entry on Topix website says no outstanding work.

Thanks

DrKaz
