2004 Defender 110 2.5 TD CSW Baltic Blue

Heater blower fault. Intermittent at first and now nothing

I wonder if anyone can help me fault find a fault with my heater blower.
The blower was intermittent and only ran consistently when the engine was above idle. Now its not running at all.
I think the issue may be the dash switch but I have no idea how to get at it.
Has anyone else had this issue? Also any advice on getting to the switch?

My wipers have also started playing up and are not returning to park from intermittent. Both faults appeared yesterday! Coldest and wettest day of the year so far!

undo the 4 screws that hold the instrument binnacle on. two by your knees the other two are at the top left and right hand sides by the sliders.

remove the clocks and the fan controls are on the left.

Dodgy the fan sound OK prior to stopping? if so check the switch contacts on the slider and give them a clean.
If not remove the air intake and try and turn the fan by hand

If the fan is seized you can try spraying wd40 into it and turning by hand until it loosens up, that may save you forking out for a new fan, as this is a fairly common problem.

OK. I've had the instrument panel off and found the switch. I can get the blower running in position one, but not two. The switch looks clean and uncorroded. Haven't put a multimeter to it yet though.

The heater blower lever arm is push up to the contacts by small spring and ball baring

Thanks Dorset. I think there may be a bad connection between the sprung contact and position 2. Will get some wet and dry paper in there tomorrow.
