Another sound proofing query
Hi all.

Looking for options re sound proofing the bonnet. There is a number of these items available on the Bay and other suppliers . Bonnet sound proofing/insulation pad - AWR4i47.

http://www.brit-car.co.uk/product.php/8243...ad_def__la

Many advertisers on the BAY state it will only fit bonnets which came with factory installed fittings, ????

The Brit car add shows spacers, washers and a bracket, looking in Microcat it states 9 spacers and washers, two brackets, assuming these fix to the bonnet bracing panels/double skin, is it viable to fix with rivnuts , possible making the spacers out of thick wall tubing, large penny washers, brackets out of ally strip.

Is it a flexible metallic/foam/fabric or a rigid composite, and of does it work.

Any info gratefully received.

EWS.

What Defender do you have? That bonnet soundproofing sheet won't fit the TD5 as the bonnet does not have the lipped edges and there's basically nothing to attach it to.
If you have a TD5 then there's a company called NK (Noise Killer) who will sell you a kit of stick on soundproofing to fit the three single skin areas.
I fitted a set and the sticky backed shaped pieces are very good, the glue is very strong and once on will not come off!
It did make a small difference to noise levels, more noticeable when driving with the vent flaps open.

Believe me it is no use for the TD5 bonnet.
I have a 2003 TD5 90 and a 2005 TD5 110.
I bought one, and tried it! There's no way to make it work properly. The TD5 bonnet edge has no lip at the sides and that soundproofing sheet is just no good.
The supplier sold it to me as TD5 compatible and l had to send it back.

And.... if you think, "Ah, I'll just get an earlier 200/300Tdi type bonnet and fit that" then you'll find that the soundproofing will touch (quite firmly) onto the plastic rocker cover thing (which itself is also insulated for soundproofing) and you'll get a helluva racket vibrating through the bulkhead.

I had a military wolf (300Tdi) bonnet on my Td5 110, and even without the soundproofing it still vibrated on the top of the engine. Got a Td5 one from Ibexman and it made the vehicle instantly quieter.

I wouldn't spend that much, £50 to do the bonnet with foil backed bitumen and self adhesive 20mm closed cell heat proof foam.

Buy the NK TD5 underbonnet kit, about £50 and does make a difference.
Or make your own pieces and stick them on, as above.
