Clutch problems
Hello

I'm a new owner of a 2005 MY defender with 84000 miles on the counter.

Each morning when I start the car and depress the clutch there is a noise. The noise fades a little when the clutch is fully depressed. When I then try to put it in (any) gear, the same noise returns.

If I then wait about a minute with the engine idleling, (not touching the clutch) there is no more noise when I depress the clutch and it goes nice and easy in gear? And the problem does not return until the car is cold again which usually means next morning. It shifts otherwise really nice and there is new MTF94 oil on the main gearbox.

Any idea whats wrong?

I think I know the noise, it is probably the spigot bearing/bush. Totallly separate from the gearbox oil. This is usually in the back of the crank and is lubricated by grease or a self lubricating material.

Mine does it too and has done since buying the car, horrible noise.

Shouldnt cause any problems and when the clutch needs changing eventually I shall make on out of something fancy ( http://www.lubroglide.com/ )

I have read about spigot bearing noise but how can't see why the exactly same noise occurs when I try to put 1. gear in. It feels like putting it in gear while the clutch is not depressed.

I would think the clutch is worn down but why does it all work fine once warm?

My 90 does this too, only when cold and only for about 200mtrs of driving, then its fine until the next morning. It makes a whirling noise when you depress the clutch.

Been driving ok for months with it.

sounds like mine, but do you also have problems getting into gear while it makes the noise?

I havent noticed a problem getting into gear, some times hard work out of reverse into first, but nothing im worried about.

maybe it's a coincidence?

Does your clutch need bleeding? Try pumping the pedal before engaging the gear

I have tried pumping it, but it unfortunately makes no difference

Hi.

Mine has done it in cold weather since the clutch was replaced and a new spigot bearing fitted 18 months ago; no other issues though so probably no need to worry.
There's no noise at all in warm weather.

You're all probably right.

We have about -6 deg celcius here in the mornings. I tried letting the webasto engine heater run for an hour (indirectly heating the clutch area) before starting the 'fender and no clutch sound + no problems going into gear... So its definitely heat related.

I'm just going to run it as is.

A quick question, is the clutch fluid supposed to be brown like mud or is this a sign of old worn out fluid?

There's an upgrade to the spigot bush introduced between 2005 and 2007.
Apparently earlier ones could break up.

I was googling 'spigot bearing' and came op with this thread

I think my problem is described by this post in the thread

If the spigot is a bush, they can wear and the shaft drops a bit, that causes drag.

If it's a roller or ball race, they can seize or collapse. you either get drag or cannot get gears as it won't let go of the shaft and the flywheel keeps turning it.

An easy way to decide which bearing it is is the thrust normally makes a noise when you press the clutch and it's under load. If you engage a gear and hold the clutch down, if it makes a noise, it's the spigot bearing.

As Simon says, a seized spigot bearing will stop a gearbox coming off. I've seen a few boxes that have been smashed to get it off the engine.


My bushing might be worn to the point that it causes the shaft to turn with the crankshaft even though the clutch is depressed, which causes the difficulty of engaging gears.

Any things I should be aware of before starting a clutch and bushing replacement on the defender considering that I only have changed one clutch before (on a Corvette Stingray)?
