United Kingdom 2010 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 XS CSW Stornoway Grey
Update
HAve been waiting to post a progress report.

Not perfect all the time.

Sometimes the engine sounds perfect and quiet. Other times there is still a Detonation type rattle, more often than not now.

THere must be something else wrong, but it seems to drive ok and have enough power. Its just the detonation noise.

Has anyone noticed some kind of power increase when experiencing the 'bag of spanners' phenomenon? I was driving home last day and was cruising at constant speed when it occurred (cold motor) and it was speeding up without changing the position of my foot on the pedal.... This could be pointing towards air intake problem? puma 2.2 MY2013

ive often wondered about air temperature as the engine seems stronger the colder the weather?

just same thoughts from my side: the colder the weather, the smoother it runs! Thumbs Up puma 2.2 MY2013

Colder air means it's more dense, packed with more oxygen per cubic meter, therefore the engine is getting more oxygen for any given speed.

Same principle as what your intercooler is trying to do.

so will a more capable intercooler make the engine run better and more consistent?

Absolutely, but there is a trade off between air cooling and creating a restriction on the air flow which effectively starves the engine of air.

So what I'm trying to say is an intercooler is a carefully designed component to maximise air flow for a given temp drop.

Check out the BAS airflow, there is quite a bit of info out there on that.

Cheers. Andy.

Try changing onto an "Ultimate" or "Premium" diesel for a couple of tanks, or adding a good quality diesel additive. Always helps mine when it gets too rattly.

I occasionally drive a luton van which is an 07 plate with a puma 2.4.

That makes the same detonation noise although its not as prominent due to having more sound insulation than my defender

What do you class as a good quality diesel additive?
