Remember in years gone by, Land Rover were heartily criticised for the engines they used.Remember in the years of the series 111 people were crying out for more power. more poke and more this and that.From 3 main bearing to 5 main bearing and people still moaned.Now with the TDCi we have state of the art and some of us are still not happy! Same went for the Td5.I know nothing is 100% perfect but will we be ever 100% pleased with what we get from Land Rover?

No!
The first six months with mine was not too bad but in the next six it was recovered from the side of the road six times, has spent over 7 weeks in the dealers. I expect after paying over 27k for something it should be reasonably reliable if not breakdown free.

I have had more trouble with my TDCi in the last year than with any other land rover I have owned in the last 20 yrs. Now I know it is a new engine and transmission and I am not so naive not to realise that new products do go wrong but and it is a big but I do expect these issues to be sorted out or even be attempted to be sorted out.

When it is going well yes it is a great engine and transmission and I love it but if I had to pay for all the work it has done in the last twelve months or so I would be broke! What happens when the warranty runs out???? Will I be putting in a new clutch in every 6000 miles?

I'm agree with Boy,

I love my defender 2007 but after 25.000 km I have been in the dealer at least 5 times.
And lost at least 3-4 weeks due repairs. I bougth several cars during my life from Americans to Japanese and regretably this defender has been the most faulty one with a big list of faulty things.

As Boy said, if you paid US$40K for a car you expect realiability.
We hope like all the things that the realiability of Puma will increase with the time when all the errors were corrected.

Well they are by me anyway, and as we all know all experiences are different !

The interior is a massive plus, I am very fond of the bonnett bulge, it has it's problems admittedly but none have been enough to put me off.
I waited for the SVX as I had been informed it was to have the TDV6 as we all know now it has not, so yes it's a shame it has not but I have found the TDCi more than capable for my needs.

It is torquey quiet and for me economical, the forward facing rear seats in my 90 sold it to me from a safety perspective and if it does go wrong then it goes back ! And it will keep going back !
I wouldn't swap mine for TD5 not a cat in helps chance

I'm quite happy with the motor and the interior, my problem is the realiabitity of the motor and some design bugs that I suposse will be corrected with the time.

Well, touching the biggest lump of wood !!!

Mines been OK, so far, only 2 returns to the dealer, one at 600 miles for the abs sensor, and then back in April, for them to change the sump pan,

My ABS sensor went on the first day on the way home from picking it up

Mine could not have been much later than that,, But took a week or so to get the sensor, as back ordered !!

Told the dealer to "line pick" it,,

I'd doubt there's anyone who wouldn't have prefered the TdV6... it would have tranformed the vehicle beyond compare... shame.

But I can't help but think once the TDCI has been in the LR as long as the TD5 was, it should be just as reliable/unreliable.
There are obviously some dogs out there, with built-in faults and the first thing the unfortunate owner is going to do is compare it to the last decent TD5 they had. If you have a series of faults, then who can blame you for being angry - especially if it goes in for warrenty work and comes back not fixed? But I can't help but think there must have been plenty of TD5 owners in the same boat 9(?) years ago?

If you've got a good one though (touching wood), I think the engine and 6 speed are an improvement - not a huge one like the TdV6 might have been, but still an improvement.

Other faults like ABS sensors are strange though - I thought they were the same as previous models, could be down to poor QC, or just a different supplier?

could well be down to supplier !

i had a VW Golf about 8 years ago it was a MK4 GTI with the turbo engine as oposed to the GTI which had a 2.0 litre naturally aspirated engine which was confusing, anyway back to suppliers and as any VW owner will know most if not all Electronic parts are BOSCH.
At that time VW were testing the water for alternate suppliers and looked at HITACHI to supply the coil packs as oposed to HT leads these used as most modern engines now do use coil on pack.

the HITACHI coil packs were S"I?E........ mine was at the dealers every other week with popped coil packs ! TT,s and all other aplications were affected....... all down to supplier change .

Its all down to costs ?

I don't mined so much all the problems and break downs, its the fact they can't (or won't) fix the issues. For example the last it went in I told them that (among other faults) the rear dif (or axel) is wining (bit like me really ) at 65mph. They just told me they could not hear anything . Yesterday I went to see a customer and took one of the emloyees with me, as soon as we got on to the A14 he says "bloody hell whats up with your dif" . Well he spotted it right away so why can't the dealers?

Until now, all my problems has been solved by the dealer in a good manner (except some water leaking) , but as you comment if the dealer cannot know the answer or simply deny the problem (or LR either) I will be more than upset

I find dealers variable in their attitude. Some will fix without argument while others will try the 'but they are all like that Sir' line It's all very well them saying that if anything goes wrong as a result of an issue all you have to do is call LR Assistance but that does not compensate for customer inconvenience or take into account that not all Defenders spend their life tootling about on the road. All my dealer could say when we were arguing about replacing the early sump with the modified version was "call for assistance if you bash a hole in it" but was at a loss for words when I asked what compensation will I get if for a ruined day if I hole the sump off road during a shoot day with a vehicle load of people on board well off the beaten track.

After all they've only had 60 years to perfect the design

I think they sometimes forget the nature of the beast.
