2005 R380 noises and poor selection & other noises
I've recently bought another TD5 110. I haven't yet investigated fully because I'm too busy until Tuesday next week, so I'd like to try and get some ideas of what to look for.

I have quite a substantial clunking when changing gear and taking up drive. I haven't really checked the A-frame ball joint yet, but briefly I was unable to find play in it, (might be not checked properly).

I suspected a some of it might be the handbrake drum, either loose or the propshaft up to it with play or slop. There's no play in any 4 propshaft joints.

The handbrake does need adjusting - only grips quite high up - something I need to do.

Because I feel like a fair amount of the play is coming from that area, I was going to take the drum off, check the flange behind it where the bolts go, also because one bolt is turning in the flange and needs cutting. And then check the linings and replace if low, and adjust the handbrake screw.

However, there is another issue with gear changing - going up through the gears is fine - but changing down from 3rd to 2nd is often very difficult if not sometimes impossible without appearing to miss 2nd on the first attempt, crunching and then finding it.

I'm not very familiar with what might cause that - I'll also be changing the oil in it and looking for what comes out.

But if anyone can relate this to something they think is specific or they have heard of this issue before, I'd be keen to soak up your knowledge 1998 110 300Tdi White Hard Top
