TD5 Centre Dash Illumination?
First post on the forum, ran a little search on here and on Google but couldn't get a definitive answer.

I picked up my first Defender last month, 2005 110. Sorted 1/2 of the problem where the interior lights not switching on when the doors open. Wires had come the switches but still haven't sorted the drivers door (that'll be another thread)

Back on topic, can anyone tell me if the centre dash buttons are meant to illuminate when the headlights are on? Mine haven't from day one, and I haven't been able to work out if they are meant to light up?

Any idea where I can start to look to diagnose the problem? The illumination works in the main dash (speedometer, fuel, temp and clock dials). All the switches work on the centre console, and the red/orange indicator lights work for the heated seats/heated windscreen etc

It's probably just the bulbs gone. Ray

Oh? It's not individual bulbs/Leds in the acutual switches then?

Didn't get a chance to take the dash apart tonight, too busy fishing another wire for the broken dormer door wire. Took much longer than expected Confused

Flip the cap off each switch where the illumination is not working and the bulb is Under the cap. Assuming your defender is a late td5 as per your profile. Ray

How do you flip the cap off?

Look like Leds under the cap, the red light works just not the illumination led. Along with every other led in the dash.

Know what wires supply what here?

I think (but may be wrong) that the clear bulb is just a 5w capless bulb so should just pull out with something like needle nose pliers but I'm doubting myself now. Maybe someone else will give a definate answer. Ray

Got the switch apart, little LED's soldering directly to the board. Will test car side connection and this tomorrow with my multimeter

Could it be that a fuse needs to be replaced in the fuse box?

Where do you have illumination? Do the gauges and heater control labels illuminate?

Sounds like it could be Fuse 20 (10A) on the bulkhead fuse box - this supplies the illumination for the centre console.

The illumination is the red with orange stripe wire throughout the loom.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top
