What's the connection on the airbox for?

I was considering doing an experiment and basically removing the air box and replacing it with a K&N conical filter connecting straight to the MAF. In theory that should work just fine and whether it's beneficial or not is still down to testing as i've never seen it done. The only thing i've noticed though before doing it is this connection to the airbox. I just wanted to know what it does and will disconnecting it put it in limp mode or have any affect really. ambient air sender is in the in side of the air filter box

Thanks. Is this like a flow or temperature sensor? What'd be the affect of unplugging this 2003 Defender TD5 90

MAF is the next one between air filter box and the turbo

It's the atmospheric pressure and temperature sensor. You need it as it gives the ECM the base line reference for boost pressure.

I wouldn't personally the oil from the k &n might damage the airflow meter. I removed the k&n panel filter from mine incase and ive not refitted it 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car)
