Today Mrs MBD took the 90 to the supermarket, only to get a tannoy call can the owner of a silver Land Rover go to customer services ASAP. Turns out that the 90 has dropped a sump full of oil over their car park. Called RAC they turned up and said the sump is corroded and there is a hole spewing the oil, anyone else had similar? Can't work out why a container full of oil has corroded, or is there another likely culprit? Jumped ship to reliability - Mitsubishi L200

When I was under my 07 Puma at the weekend, I noticed my sump has a couple of spots of heavy corrosion that need addressing asap. There are no dents or scuffs. I guess a well aimed stone chip is enough the get it started.
It makes no difference that it is covered in oil on the inside as the rust starts on the outside. |

Sumps do rust, quite common to see on many vehicles.
They usually pin hole and just seep oil, only until you touch them by disturbing the outer layer they will then start leaking quite quickly. 
I had sucsefull results a few months ago repairing a straight six Volvo truck sump. The dealer wanted nearly a grand for the sump and gasket, so I thought we have nothing to loose and went about repairing it. I've tried to weld them up before, but they are generally rather thin, and you either make them worse, or just keep blowing holes, bit like trying to weld a rotten exhaust!! I took the sump off, stripped it to bare metal and gave the whole outside surface a skim of Plastic Padding Chemical metal filler. Rubbed it down, then another skim, re painted it looked as good as new, and holding up very well to date! obviously a tdci sump should be reasonably priced? I would like to think around £100 mark??? I would try a ford dealer for the sump rather than Land Rover..  80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

The Ford sump is not the same as the Defender sump due to the propshaft clearance issue mentioned above.
About £95 genuine, £50 pattern by the looks of it. I think the one I had fitted in 2010 was about £30 new genuine. |

Blackwolf - I'll have to check mine, if I remember mine is in quite good condition.
I never rust proofed it with stonechip or Dinitrol and its so close to the engine and no doubt gets hot. I've just used WD40 on it on a rag instead IIRC, what have others drones? Prevention would be better than cure. |

I had a 2008 Transit Connect tdci from new and there was a recall to replace the sump due to "corrosion".
Just be glad it didn't drop its oil while you were on the motorway! |

We get quite a few Transits with this issue.
Like Ian, we merely clean the sump pan up/out and repair with J B Weld or similar, then hand paint with Hammerite. Far easier and cheaper then replacement. Never Ever had a repaired one fail again Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant. |

I just don't get that positive feeling about Ford design and longevity. I'm thinking about the cost accountant tasked with saving on every stage of design, materials, production and assembly. |
