Work on the Defender and the cost there of....
Had some work done on the 110 200 tdi this week.

Timing belt kit supplied and fitted
Engine oil and filter changed
Air filter changed
Diesel filter changed
Clutch fluid changed
Brake fluid changed
Coolant change
Gearbox/transfer box/diffs oil changed
bump stop fitted
U.J. replaced
rear part of exhaust replaced
shock absorber bushings replaced
water pump replaced
2 brake pipes replaced
two track rod ends replaced
R/H mudshield (Defender brakes) replaced
Some repairs to outriggers-plating/welding/painted etc
5 new jubilee clips
Front headlights set
3 bulbs replaced.
The work was done by the independent who built the 110 station wagon for me in 1996. It started life as a 1992 110 pick up but I bought it in 1996 and had it converted into a 9 seater.
Anyway the cost including parts/labour/vat etc came to €820 or £692. I have no complaints with the bill as the work is always done well. Wonder what a maindealer would have charged? 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

That sounds like a very competitive price to me! There's a fair amount of work in your list. Do you know what the labour rate is? Most people (independents) seem to be charging £40+VAT labour rate up here, don't know how that compares to further south. 2005 Td5 | 90 Station Wagon | Tonga Green

I think mine are £50+vat, the local village mechanic is £35-40 but isn't VAT registered.
TBH I think I'm probably going to move back to him for servicing and give him the oil I want him to use.

The labour is down as €370 (£312). Vat was added in the final total. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

At this juncture in time , I don't think my soul would command much of a premium. Whistle 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

You won't get a routine service from a main dealer for that price!

That sounds very reasonable compared to NZ prices Smile

How long was the vehicle with them?

I'd have done all of that myself (*) but the issue is time - it takes me ages - and if I'm working it just cant happen.

* except water pump and full coolant change, yet to play with those! Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

No fancy showroom and you can get as involved as you want with the work. Many a time I've joined in with the tea breaks while I was down.

We were heading away for a week in the Puma so I left the tdi in while we were away. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel
