Those Aussies get some amazing overland trailers and campers,I'm not really jealous. Always fancied one of these but not sure when does a camping trailer become a caravan Very Happy

Can anyone tell me how the nene chaser trailer tubs are constructed?

Is it alloy panels on a steel tubular space frame, glued or riveted?

Thanks

My own build - disclaimer work in progress...

Based on a locally made chassis with Defender Bolt circle.

Aluminium frame, stainless hinges and compression locks.

Running twin Engels (MT45 shown), twin 100 AH batteries and mains hook up.

Power to the batteries is supplied by nato connectors. Its possible to isolate the vehicle and trailer so toerags don't short circuit the cables.

Howling moon Trailer top tent with extensions at both ends.

Total weight with (far too much gear) 1025 kg.

Done alot, have alot to do, some stuff im happy with others not and will redo once time allows.

Glen

Easy...
You can drive the landy all the time a leave the trailer at home.

A similar argument in reverse against the roof tent that we had.

You know it makes sense.

Plus it's cool.....(or whatever the saying is these days) Very Happy

A lot of nice trailers here.
Cold n' Wet, was your chassis built to your specification? If so what suspension set up did you opt for? And if you don't mind saying, how much did the chassis cost to build? (I understand if you don't want to announce that on a public forum) . I ask because I sold my converted Sankey with rtt last year with the intention of building a teardrop style trailer. Would be good to have a ball park figure for a chassis price before I approach our local trailer builder.

Is it me or is most of the production trailers carrying a lot of wasted space???? I know weight and stability is issues with trailers but it seems that on some of them you are losing a large % of space due to them stopping at the arches. Ive been playing around and seen on some other sites that home made ones seem to use all the space and yet have no consequneces ( that the use has admitted)

Im thinking of a rapier trailer with a box style body on it and go from there with a RTT on top. only problem i can possibly see at the minute is all the legalitys which other people seem to be working throught and getting round.

I'm not sure why so many trailers only use part of the width, I prefer to have the maximum under cover area possible on mine so that, and price, has meant that I've stuck with and am very happy with the standard Sankey body. The benefits of having a narrower body than the wheels are limited but I know many manufacturers mount jerry cans and batteries "externally" on the running boards at each side. It may give some advantages off road too, keeping the body away from trees/rocks however this only works if you don't have a tent mounted on it.

If you use a trailer tent, as opposed to a roof tent, the height of the trailer is determined by the tent and, for the Howling Moon one at least, the tent really needs to be mounted so the hinge is aligned with the outside of the wheel on that side.

The advantage of going full width (especially when the trailer has the same track as the tow vehicle) is that it makes it much easier to reverse the trailer using just your wing mirrors. The Sankey body on mine is the same width as the 90 so you can judge very easily what the angle of the trailer is relative to the vehicle. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/
