I have done the exact process before and yes you have to remove the computer box (ECU). I disconnected the battery before I removed the connectors on the ECU and it all went back fine. At first it did not start but when I connected up the speedo cluster it started fine. I did not have to use any diagnostic stuff to get it going.
The aircon thermostat or de ice switch has been revised so make sure you are fitting the latest part number. On my aircon I believe the de ice switch failed leading to icing on the evaporator and eventually evaporator failure. It was a big job but not as bad as I thought. Whole dash off - sounds worse than it is and the ECU was a doddle.
If you want to try it, I wlii be happy to give you any tips from my limited experience David |

Hi, I have an air con leak that has got to the stage that if I re gas it will will only work for 2 weeks now.
We believe it is the evaporator which will have a small hole. I want to get the part but when I look in the parts catalogues it is not shown in any schematic. I have found so far. So I need to know the part number for the evaporator. In the workshop manual it shows a picture of the heater unit without the evaporator and says. "The heater assembly is mounted behind the instrument panel on the vehicle center line. The heater assembly contains an aluminum heater matrix and a diffuser plate to deliver the required air temperature into the cabin. If the vehicle is fitted with A/C, the A/C evaporator replaces the diffuser plate in the heater assembly." In the parts catalogue I can only find the heater matrix part no. LR020952 Reciever dryer is JRJ000020 Expansions valve is JQD500070 Any ideas or help appreciated. 2010 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 TDCI. |

Greg,
I removed the evaporator/heater assembly and modified an evaporator from a Toyota. The only part that Land Rover supply, as I understand, is a complete evaporator/ assembly unit which is very expensive an virtually impossible to get here in Tanzania It has worked well now for 7/8 months. You had to do that for a Puma TDCI? What is the part number for the complete unit? I am getting scared now as no one in the posts above has metioned it as being a super expensive unfindable part. Plenty of toyota s here though. 2010 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 TDCI. |

I never got the part number, sorry. You have to order the whole evaporator and heater assembly in it's black plastic box that you can see at the bottom of the dashboard. That is what the parts dept here told me. They would have to order it from UK. The modification using a second hand Toyota evaporator was not too difficult and very cheap in comparison. David |

Part no. LR036308 for LHD. £458.46 plus http://www.brit-car.co.uk/product.php/1881...er_2007_on And the air con in these cars is  anyway it has never worked well for last few years. Mine also used to freeze up but since fitting the Toyota evaporator, it has not done it again. That could be because it was full of dirt, dust, etc. It cost me about £50 inc fitting and gas!! Did all the dashboard removal etc myself David |

Sorry, I don't have the party number or the model of Toyota. I removed it, gave it to the Air Con man and he went to find one that was a similar size.
Wish I could help. After fitting the new one I drove the car for a couple of weeks without the dash to make sure it was ok. Hope you succeed David |

Ok I have taken out the whole dash and the unit and confirmed that the evaporator is leaking. I have checked with an air con repairer here and we could not find one that would replace it. It is relatively small.
That guys says there are about 10 of these Pumas in Yangon and all have the same problem. He is searching in China for a replacement. Says they only last about 5 or 6 years. Mine had several small leaks and one major which was the final straw. So mine had several fine leaks and one big one. So it looks like every six years we will have to buy a whole new unit for over $500 US. Thats brilliant design Landrover. I also took photos along the way and will make a dash removal document soon. 2010 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 TDCI. |
