Wheel bearings or something else
Had my 300tdi up on the jack today to check to see if my front brakes were sticking as have had very hot pads, before removing wheel noticed I had a lot of play if I rocked the tyre 12 to 6 but not much 9 to 3. After removing wheel I had a slight rubbing noise in one place. So my questions are am I looking at my wheel bearing need replacing then replace my pads and discs? Is this something a novice can attempt any tips/ hint appreciated.

If the play is 12-6 and not 3-9, then the problem is not the wheel bearings but the swivel pins/bearings. They can be tightened by removing the shims under the top pin. 80" 1948

I had the same. Spent the day yesterday fitting new top and bottom bearings (plus gaskets and seals etc.). Reasonably easy job, takes a while and is quite possibly the dirtiest job I've ever done!

However, I now have near perfect steering (95%) and no wandering defender Smile

I need to do one of my swivel seals at some point Sad Ought to stop prevaricating and start doing!

It's one of those jobs. Not particularly technical or difficult. But long, laborious and filthy. But once done, makes a world of difference

I made the mistake of not having swivels balls to hand to swap out. So it means I have to do it again at some point. Twice. Or just keep filling with one shot Smile
