Rear Camera Install
OK so I currently have too many projects on the go at once but the camera part of what I chose arrived today so though when back from work have a start on it.

First thing first I have spent AGES looking at what camera to buy, 110 degree to 170 degree, low level light, round ones (fit in cross member), square ones...Then where to fit as unless I fit above roof line its likely to be offset.

Anyway after lots of googling and reading the camera below is what I chose, the screen has not arrived yet....

so a quick guide to what I've done.

1) Remove rear panel, just clips onto the pressed metal of the car with the clips you can see, 2 in total.

2) Remove speaker pod, I could not do this at first as did not spot the two plastic lugs under the carpet.

3) Remove rear number plate plinth as this is where I decided to fit the camera

4) Result as I thought I would have to drill the back of the truck but the hole with grommet already big enough Smile so drill a hole in the plinth and use a gromet then pass camera cable through.

5) Grommet ready and camera ready to be mounted.

6) You will never see it but while the plinth off quick polish....

7) Nice and clean

Cool Mount Camera to plinth

9) Inside of car behind the plinth (lights) showing cable

10) Plug camera end (small red plug into large red plug)

11) Camera view from side at back

12) Camera view from back

That's all for now as had to make kids tea as wife running late Very Happy , plus I have not got the screen yet and I need to work out how / what to do with the wires....

This camera is a 170 degree version, so should have a wide view making the fact its off set not so much an issue? time will tell. Happy with my hour spent outside .

Hello

After many evenings googling, reading reviews and checking e-bay, chineese web sites and amazon then working out where I could fit the camera that would be out of sight?

Also many have much thicker wires (the camera output would have to fit through a larger hole)

Plus I wanted the 170 degree one, with good night vision.. I came across this

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0105L...&psc=1

hopefully it will be ok

Looks like a good job done and for an excellent price, my only gripe with number plate light mount is its not central but better than drilling the body anywhere.

Please post up some photos of it when connected up, interested to see the results. Thumbs Up

I could never understand premium brands selling cameras, they make them pretty big so theft and mounting is more of an issue.
The bigger issue, no doubt the quality is good but some want about £70 - £130 for them.

To my mind £30 - 70 woud,be more appropriate...

Thanks for posting Stacey and keep them coming, i'm interested in what screen/mirror/head unit you use to view as it's a mod I think i'll end up doing. Its looking very neat and I think the best place for the camera to save any drilling etc.
I've driven a lot of Transits from work with rear cameras that you view in the rear view mirrors as reverse is selected and I like this as it saves the need for an extra screen altho I also like the single din pop out/up head units that have an input fora camera and have sat nav built in although you don't see them about much these days.
What are you using to view it from Stacey ??

Thanks,
Mark

I wonder if the number plate light will effect the camera picture?

I did think that but lots of camera are sold built into the rear lens for the number plate light so time will tell Smile

Hope not but can always move it?

Ideally I would like a double din radio and while I don't mind spending £300 plus on a radio I do mind spending the same for a bit of plastic to make it happen.

I looked long and hard at the rear screens but wasn't sure how it would look in the Defender as the rear view is quite small.

I've gone for this as its 5" which I thought was a good view able size, has a slightly better screen than most at 800*480 and when not in use I can fold it down out of site. The plan is to put it on the top of center dashboard above from the clock?

Its not arrived yet so will have to see what it actually looks like. It can also take two feeds but priority is the reversing camera.

Still need to work out the wiring so may post some help with this... Very Happy

That is exactly the point I got to about a month ago, still there.

Not into electrics so will follow closely how to make the connections, particularly power.

Are you going to use the reverse light for a feed?

Spare half hour after reading books to kids and me watching Game of Thrones,

So a small update, I am the first to admit electrics and cars for me don't mix so I'm hopefully doing this right...

I bought these bits to help with this job (and my Sankey rebuild)

Looked at the rear to see how I get the wire to the reversing light and there is a big rubber grommet Smile that will do, Taped up the wires and pushed them through

Then off with the reversing light and search for wires...

Plugged my checker in and jumped in car, started it and watched it rise to almost 14v so know which its + tive and negative.

I've never liked these Crimp things but they did seem to crimp tight as I bought the small ones... so Hopefully OK. I also want to tape these up.

Then to work out how I get to the front... I thought about under the carpet but then spotted the up and over route... so started pushing up at the side and replacing the rear trim panels.

Ha d a slight issue near the rear grab handle but the side clips pop off and 2 screws on each side slightly undo then the cable flips over the edge and re tighten,

I need to work out how the head lining clips come undone and just pop 3 out on the passenger side to get the cable hidden.

from here...

down here (2 little screws) and push it behind out of sight,

and then finally so roughly where its going... but no screen yet..

#####

I will tidy up where it ends and the spare wire once I have the screen and see how that connects... I'm still confused by the wiring as the input to the screen now on the dash also has a red wire (bare) so need to find where that goes.

If anyone can tell me the best way to remove the headlining plugs that would be good.

Thanks

Pull the headlining back slightly just at the edge and thencarefully push the wire uo and behind.
It'll stay put uo there once you have as the headlinging is a snug fit.
Then you won't need to remove it at all. Thumbs Up
