Sounds like something is loose, I'd say check pulley bolts etc to ensure they are right, is the tensioner moving a lot? 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

the ac has recently dumped the gas so possibly the pump is having a bit of trouble. is there any problem in running it without it gassed? CC |

The AC pump should be a free spool clutch until in is turned on, if the clutch has stuck on this would be a reason for the noise. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

Sounds like a bearing on one of the things on the aux belt to me. Could be the idler or tensioner or worse could be a/c compressor or PAS pump.
Worth whipping the belt off and having a feel of the pulleys for endfloat or rough rotations. Steve 02' 110 TD5 Double Cab Rebuild Thread 84' 90 3.9 V8 Caged Pickup Build Thread - Now For Sale |

AC compressor will probable sound nose if you have AC system leak, AC compressor has elect magnetic clutch so with AC switch off compressor free wheel only

Could be right out of left field, but leaking exhaust manifold gaskets (quite common on TD5s) can make some very weird noises. Worth a look. Cheers, Lionel |

I was taking the D4 for a service so booked the TD5 in as well.
As soon as I told it I was taking it toi see Steve at James French it stopped making the noise. So we didnt go for a diagnosis. At the moment I am waiting for it to re appear to look at it further. CC |

Seemed fine and then suddenly seized. Hence i am waiting for a recovery truck.
The pulley to the rhs underneath the power steering pump. Or is it the air con pump? Anyone an idea of the part number and where best to get one. CC Click image to enlarge |
