mmm great project there LR90.

My series knowledge comes entirely from Lightweights, which I had the pleasure of trundling around in last weekend at the parents house. I see you get a proper heater on this Series III which is interesting, I'd assumed they'd be the same Smiths heater as on the Lightweight.

For a matter of interest, how is the space for the driver in a Series III? Do you know if it is identical to the Lightweight (Series IIa)? I had to get rid of it as basically I didn't fit. I'm only 6'2", but got massive knee cramps after an hour of driving and found I had to stop. Space is fine in the Defender though - so I wondered if it was a Lightweight thing or common to all Series vehicles?

That seems to be going a lot faster than my series 3 rebuild! I've just decided that I need a replacement tub which is slowing things down considerably. I don't suppose your father has any advice/diagrams on brake pipe routing? I am rebuilding my series 3 onto a new galvanised chassis and the brake pipes are next job!

visited Wales and got to take it for a spin, not for those whom like originality but certainly moves and all the switches and gauges work. with the RR diffs it feels quite high geared but a few revs and the engine mods it moving pretty quickly although I didnt get above 2nd gear in the limited space I had

to answer a couple of questions, I am 5 foot 9 and it has a lot less room than the Defender certainly at 6 foot 2 it would be uncomfortable, re the brake pipe routing my father has not followed the original routing and apparently it changed several times during s3 manufacturing so it is age dependent

Love that "dashboard", best I've ever seen,...LLLOOOVVVEEE those Smiths Guages,...had 'em in a few of my cars,...couldn't see the speedo & tacho,.....what are they & what do they look like?
BEAUTIFUL work in the engine bay with those immaculate twin crbs etc!!

I like the fact that those switches and lights are so out of date, but were very much 'de rigueur' at the time of the S3, so they totally suit it Cool I remember my dad having those switches and lights in a box of old car bits in his garage.
It would have looked wrong with a row of carling switches.

Love it.

1) lights

3......................(not even a heater)

thanks Gents,

yes I think he has raided his parts bin for the gauges and switches, all the switches work and control something or another, I asked him what and he showed me a long list.

The main dash gauges are smiths rev counter and speedometer (from a Triumph I think he said) his installation/execution is extremely neat and all the wiring is individually fused and anything pulling more than a few amps has a relay again generally using period bits (see the under bonnet photos for the fuse boxes). He made his own loom from scratch but used factory cable colours to make fault finding easier.

He is after a 2.5 litre petrol engine if anyone has one for sale as he wants to take the engine mods further and apparently apart from the extra cc's they have a different cam

Just a note regarding room in the cab. The SWB series variants have smaller cabs than the LWB or any coilers. This was rectified on the 90 by using the same centre bulkhead as the LWB which gave more room, but means lengthening the wheelbase to get the same floor length in the back. Hence why the 90 was born. A 109" has the same dimensions as a 110, but the difference in space is massive when comparing say my IIA 109" with a late model Defender, that Puma dash is massive and takes up a lot of space, and in my truck cab 130 you just can't get those massive seats back far enough to allow enough room. 2011 110 USW

The carb set up looks very nice, I've never seen twin su's on a 2.25 before, is he fitting twin military fuel tanks to accommodate the fel consumption?!
I have a single su and acr inlet manifold on my 2.25, fuel consumption compared to the old zenith is poor but performance is fantastic (for a series engine!)

I'm just selling a complete V8 Conversion kit to S1 club member, still miss my 2a Lightweight V8.... Need another V8 in my life!!!! Working towards Carry on camping!

Luckily I managed to find a good V8 that had come out of a series that was being Converted to TDI.
So the engine has adaptor ring, spigot bush, and drilled flywheel for series clutch, RR manifolds, etc etc...

Hope to make a start on it in the new year, lots of bits arriving daily at the moment. Mr. Green


I too missed my old 109 series 3 V8, hopefully this one will bring back happy memories?
Although fuel was much cheaper back then.... Laughing 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"
