Whuh, whuh, whuh, whuh
Those of a more mechanical bent, advice please. The 110 is in workshops today, so have borrowed Mrs Grenadier's Mini. When standing outside the car, behind the exhaust, there is a warble of exhaust gases, rather than purr. Hence the phonetic description in the title (please say out loud, in a private place, to get the full gist Whistle ).

Car has had a recent new battery and had a service with full diagnostics, nothing registering.

Any ideas what would be the main cause? Dirty fuel filter? Timing belt? Other?

Help or thoughts welcome. Thumbs Up Monsieur Le Grenadier

1.6 Cooper.

Not starting very easily, (so I am thinking solenoid, but spark plugs were aparently changed last service), and can surge a little bit. Also in the past, under idle there was enough rev to allow for a controlled reverse without applying the accelerator. Tried today and stalled. Did wonder at a missing cylinder, but as mentioned, nothing came up on the computer/ECU checks. Monsieur Le Grenadier

What sort of age/mileage?

I was reading an article the other day about these engines suffering quite badly from carbon build up. 2003 Defender 90 Td5 CSW Belize Green - "Betty"

2005 RHD, 'Cooper', Manual, 70k miles. 90% long journeys, mostly by my wife (1st and only owner), so never 'ragged'. FMSH. NB, 2005 was the 'cross over year' for the new Mini between the original and the updated variant. Different engines I believe. This is an original 'new' Mini, Park Lane variant. Monsieur Le Grenadier

My girlfriend has exactly the same 1.6 cooper park lane 55 plate. She's recently had the completely rotten backbox replaced which changed the tone massively. But aside from that I've never noticed anything i consider to be an unusual engine noise....nor a warble. I'll have a listen out over the next few days and see.

I'll try and record it. Most defintely not right. Sounds a bit like a Subaru Impreza, sadly without the extra BHP... Monsieur Le Grenadier

Inspect the exhaust system, your symptom sounds as I its blowing, difficulty in starting could possibly be due to the weather we've recently had, its not impossible that the new battery isn't up to maximum output.

The sporty sound you describe often turns out to be a blowing exhaust.

Ok, for those interested, here's some video. It was shot last night, once home. We had done a steady 90kmh, 20km drive home. Nothing violent.

Interestingly it was -12c overnight and -8c when I tried starting this morning. I say tried as there was nothing. I think the battery is dead, so I am thinking alternator or similar. Would that make the warble?

Btw, this video was the worst it has sounded. Normally it's there, but less pronounced. Thumbs Up Monsieur Le Grenadier

Sounds like a missfire on idle and a nackered exhaust.

wow not what I was expecting, does it disappear when you give it revs? If it's still there i'd be looking along the exhaust for starters as they're prone to rot all over. If not then as AJC says doesn't sound like it's firing all 4 cylinders, plugs and coil for starters?

Yes, exhaust was a consideration. The thing is absolutely nothing came up on the diagnostic checks last autumn. It's only been used a handful of times since then. As mentioned, dead this morning and that sound last night was the worst I have heard it. Big Cry Monsieur Le Grenadier

My wifes mini developed the same sound last night!
Half way home she got an engine warning light, nursed it home and then suggested I took it out.
Having heard the sound it was making, I left it where it was. It sounded much worse on acceleration.
Will be taking it into the garage later this week (I am only happy working on Defenders, none of this modern stuff!)
Will let you know if I learn anything that may be relevant.

Thanks 130. Not a little ironic that it dies when the 110 is in workshops. Such is life. I, like you, don't like these modern, complicated German things. Keep it simple, stupid is a great motto. Good luck, will keep you posted on what I find out as well. Thumbs Up Monsieur Le Grenadier
