Weird starting and cutting out issue
This morning car started ok. Drove to work and left in the carpark from 8am till 5pm.
Got back in the car to come home, started as normal.
A few seconds idling and then cut out. Tried to restart and no - just a long crank with some smoke out the exhaust (grey).
Tried again this time cranking and pumping the throttle pedal and then brummm starred fine. Drove home fine with no lack of power.

Fuel gauge showed just under 1/4 just as it was when I left home.
Filled up with fuel started fine and ran fine.

Ordered a new fuel filter just in case. 1999 Defender TD5 110

The issue happened again last night after leaving work. Started fine then cut out and took an age to start.
This morning it started fine, fuel level again not far off 1/4 tank - same as last night

The issue has only appeared after having the fuel tank removed so the x-member could be replaced. (Could just be bad timing I guess?)

Any thoughts ? 1999 Defender TD5 110

Could be some airlocks kicking around in the system. Or the pipe union onto the tank was damaged/not refitted correctly so you're getting air and fuel.

Have you checked the injector loom for oil ingress?

Just seen the tank was removed, as said above check unions for tightness, also some sediment could of been dislodged and this could be restricting the fuel pickup pipe. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

Try priming/purging it. Ignition to pos2, pump gas pedal 5+ times quickly. Engine management light will flash and fuel pump will makes lots of funny noises.

Mmm good thought but the issue only appears to happen when I get to around 1/4 tank.
Will have a look and see if I can see any leaks - which I guess I would get if the pipe was damaged/not fitted correctly? 1999 Defender TD5 110

Thanks will give it a go. Normally after replacing a filter I would refit the filter and turn ignition to pos2 and leave it whirling away until the pump stops. 1999 Defender TD5 110

If only around half a tank I would say it's somthing inside the tank restricting the pickup pipe. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

More like 1/4 of a tank. From what I saw the fuel pump was not removed - just the pipes. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Sorry ment 1/4, the tank might have some crap in it that floats around happily until it gets to 1/4 at that point it is drawn to the pickup pipe and restricts flow. I have found everything from rag/wood to plastic bags and empty bottles in fuel tanks on various vehicles over the years. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

Check if the fuel filter is tight. I got a 1/4 of a turn out of mine this winter. Ray
