Defender won't start strange dash lights
Evening folks, I am re-building a td5 currently. Recently put in a lower milage td5 engine, all good swapped the injectors over from old engine, everything was running fine. Left it in the workshop ready to waxoxyl it the next day, cracked on and thought about halfway through the day should probably start it... and got nothing. Didn't even turn over, like there was a flat battery, put a fresh battery in just incase it had drained over night or something. Same thing.

However, I get lights on the dash that stay on, these are the indicators, fog lights and side light lights ?

Any ideas can't find anything about those warning dash lights anywhere online ?

That's a new one on me, I would be leaning to double checking the battery condition and instalation, then double checking over what you had done to prep it in readiness to waxoyling.

Check grounding - between battery, chasis and engine. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "BlufĂnek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

I'd had taken the wings off, as new ones are going on. As I understand it the alarm is in one of the wings, so I plugged them back in and tried again with the same result. I cleaned off the earth to the chassis from the battery, and tried two separate batteries, checked them both with the volt meter putting out 13 volts, so no issues there.

Very strange, might have to get a computer plugged into it. The only thing I didn't try on the off chance might work was unplugging and re plugging the ECU in. Must some sort of weird electrical gremlin, 1 step forward 2 steps back !

Does the ignition turn on as normal - i.e. you get glow plug light on (then off), charge warning lamp (battery symbol), dash gauges move... or not?  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Yes, lights all come on glow plug comes on and goes off. Milage shows up etc, then they all the lights go off but the indicators, fog lamps and side lights stay on.

It's beginning to sound like a problem around the dashboard/switch housing by steering wheel. Perhaps the multi-plug behind the dash clocks where it takes feeds from the indicator, lights and fog light switches.

Are the actual lamps on as well as the indicators? My money would be on grounding. Block to chassis strap, any other grounds in the engine bay.

It is just the lights on the dash, not the actual lights that are on. I thought it was some kind of warning light sequence, but haven't found anything about it yet. I will have to check all of the grounding points next
