Unstable idle is driving me mad!
My 02' 110 still has an annoying idle problem. Has more or less done it since i bought it 2yrs ago. The usual symptom, dip the clutch when rolling to a stop at junctions etc and engine idle is really unstable (grr, grr, grr, grr....) blip the throttle and its fine until it drops back to idle.
Things have improved lately and now only does it when cold (but not until you get to a juction to slow down). Other than this is drives fine, hardly any smoke, plenty of power, drives smoothly except at a bit jerky at low throttle opening in 1st and 2nd gear.

Engine is 15p and has done just over 110k, has had the following done:
Genuine FPR fitted
Genuine injector seals fitted
Full services with genuine filters
Genuine VDO MAF sensor fitted
Inlet manifold spotlessly clean as is MAP sensor
EGR removed
Decatted
Mid-pipe replacement
Fuel pump pickup spotless
Filter air bleed valve replaced
Injector harness replaced and no oil in red plug

Cant really think of anything else to try other than a remap!

Any suggestions,
Cheers

Firstly I will say I don't know the answer, but would ask whether it could be the throttle itself. Mine has similar issues only not quite as bad as yours by the sounds of it. Mine was a lot smoother in low range than high the other day. This is what led me to think it could be the throttle as the ecu softens throttle response in low range. 2002 110 td5

Can't remember what I was told exactly but it's something to do with emissions. It will miss behave till the speedo sits at zero.
Something along the lines of it cuts fuel to lower the emissions and save fuel. 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car)

Nothing wrong with it. They're meant to do it, part of the fuel saving strategy in the fuel map.

I'm experiencing exactly the same thing. I've done most of the things on your list plus I've had a Stage 1 remap but it still does it. (Would highly recommend the remap though as it transforms it!!).

Unless the fuel saving strategy is correct, (which would explain it and would also stop me trying to solve it!) I have read somewhere that it could be the 'clutch position sensor' which I believe is on the master cylinder. Not had a chance yet to check this out on mine but could be worth a look? 2002 Defender 110 CSW TD5

Simply put, no. Purely because it's a characteristic not a fault. Don't worry about it, it's perfectly normal. I'd be more concerned if it didn't do it

Check the crank position sensor. There was a recall in 2001/2 as a lot of the 15p engines did not have the correct shim fitted, most did not have the shim at all.

My 2001 15p had the shim missing and once diagnosed and shim in place it transformed the vehicle.

I think mine suffers from the same symptoms.
Mainly when stopped, seems as if it drop on to 4 cylinders, sort of 'chuggy'. Never cuts out but is a bit annoying.
Also when slowing down sometimes I seem to get a bit of thudding from underneath which I think maybe the prop.
Would I be right in thinking this ?
Doesn't happen all the time.

I also get a similar effect with mine, coming to a stop it idles very rough as though it's mis-firing and only running on 3 or 4, after a few seconds it goes away and ticks over normally, seems fairly consistent but worse when hot.

I don't ever remember my earlier Td5 (10P) doing it. I had wondered about oil in the loom but couldn't see any trace of any last time I looked.

The early 10ps don't do it. The later ones do especially with the 90 software from memory. All the 15ps do it 90,110,130, disco..........
