Name of a thing like a cam latch? Where to buy?
I'm looking for something to hold one edge of a board down on my work in progress sleeping platform. The idea is that the edge nearest to the engine slots in to a bit of channel, then there's about 40cm of board, the door end sits on a bit of angle, attached to a bit of box where the vertical supports fit, there's another bit of channel on the back, rinse and repeat. Like this, the black bits are metal, the brown bits are wood:

But I need something to stop the back edge flying out when I go over a bump and to stop it rattling. I was thinking a couple of cam locks, I've seen flush mount ones that have a recessed metal plate with a handle, which would stop the up and down movement.

However, when you're building something like a cold room, the panels all lock together with something that's basically a cam lock but actually pulls the adjacent panels together too. Like a cam lock but in an "j" shape where the hook of the "j" catches a peg and pulls it towards the "." of the "j". If I could use them, it would give it a load more front to back strength as all the sections would be locked together rather than being able to wobble backwards and forwards.

I've found this on US ebay:

Does anyone know what I'm talking about, what it's called and where I could get something like that from? It's on a budget so I don't want to spend a fortune Rolling with laughter

Failing that, what about just a "normal" recessed cam lock? Does anyone have a good source of them? These look about right to me: http://www.wdsltd.co.uk/product/3888/lift-...m-wds-8552

Or have I missed an obvious answer to my problems and it's not actually a cam latch at all Rolling with laughter

Thanks in advance Smile

I think I can see where you're aiming but a quick look on t'internet for cam latches brings up mainly American stuff as does overcentre catches such as
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/STAINLESS-STEEL-...SwLzdWT2Vi

Try having a look at some of the boat chandlers sites as they bound to use simple positive "pulling" catches.

By putting that in my watch list on fleabay then looking for 'similar items' this very nice and shiny one popped up, trouble is that they seem to be all in the US of A!

Would anything like Screwfix - Part No: 15443 - Toggle fit the bill? (Screwfix's picture show it being used the wrong way around Rolling with laughter ).

You could try Googling Toggle Catch if it's heading in the right direction or look at Sash Fasteners (Screwfix - 74986)?

Good luck.

Some good food for thought there, thank you.

I like this idea:

I've thought about over centre catches (like those little Screwfix ones) and actually use one for my fold out table, so that's a good option too Thumbs Up

They have some really nice stuff but how do you buy it and where are prices?
I only want a handful, I'm not building a coach!

I've bought a couple of compression latches from ebay to have a try with... I think I should be able to make them work.

Thanks all!

If anyone has any other ideas in the mean time please feel free to chip in Smile

Edit:

One thing I'd completely forgotten about (annoying considering how many of the things I've used) are flight case latches:

If you want to try any of the southco stuff Google the following. Will bring up a whole host of option, many including prices etc.

"southco distributors uk"

Good idea. I think I've probably found a quicker if slightly more complex solution. We shall see!

Depends which you mean. The first ones are "Southco C2 style compression latches" from ebay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271312170087

The second ones (the flightcase latches) are from CPC:
http://cpc.farnell.com/1/3/butterfly-latches

If you search for butterfly catch rather than butterfly latch, it comes up with some more similar ones from the same manufacturer that are cheaper. They also happen to be slightly better for what I want, and I only found them after I'd ordered. Oh well!

Hi,

meant the sliding one from carbuilders but found it.

The other ones are well known.
