Wheel bearing problems
Trying to replace front axle wheel bearings myself but not successful. It seems that the outer bearing has collapsed completely and the rollers are falling out and the track is stuck on the shaft making it impossible to pull out the hub.

Have you any ideas about how to proceed with this task?

Unless you can split the bearing inner race (eg by drilling parallel to the stub axle and splitting with a chisel) brute force (such as a big hub puller) is likely to be your only option. It is likely you'll have to replace the stub axle anyway, so it matters little if you damage it.

I can't remember if it is possible to unbolt the stub axle from the swivel housing with the hub in place on the stub axle. If it is, that gives you another option but involves a lot of new parts.

Managed to get the hub off today with a puller and the bearing race came off by some heat and brutal force. Have to use some emery cloth tomorrow to smother the shaft so that I can get the inner bearing off. I think that the shaft will survive.

The bearing kit that I got from UK today contains two nuts (one with flange and one without). Do you think I should convert to two nut design instead of the current one nut plus spacer design? Is the washer supplied with the kit and goes behind the nut (or between the nuts) the same?

Regards/Hans

Personally I prefer the single nut setup. The stub shafts aren't expensive any damage I'd just change it for peace of mind more than anything

I prefer the older 2 nut system as you can readjust it. Roel

I finished the job today and went for single nut solution. Tightened the nut to 210 Nm or rather "fully tight" as the picture shows. Test drive did not create any heat from the bearings so we will see how long it will last. For the time being I am pleased with myself. Smile /Hans

But the 5 new bolts for the hub member included in the kit got the correct torque of 65 Nm. Are these important to replace as they are included in kit?

Not unless they're damaged.

A dab of Locktite will help prevent them coming undone. And/or Spring washers.
