110 XS - thinking of buying

Thinking of upgrading my td5 to a puma 110 XS

Current thinking is

110 7 seat option with
metallic paint
tow pack
sunroof

Some say ditch the sun roof it will leak - thoughts?

What else is worth considering? ie is there anything you wish you had on one after purchase that would have been useful?

I have an XS, I ditched the sunroof !

After owning a couple of DEFENDERS with a sun roof i thought i would ditch it, i,ll be honest one reason was because of leaks but as with your experience none of my previous have ever leaked. It was just an excuse really for not having one !

The AirCon more than compensates for any air that a sun roof could expel !

The best thing about not having a sunroof though is not having street lighting bathing the inside through the glass roof ! it also kind of feels a bit more sturdier because its all closed in.

Chalky, that all makes sense

my reasoning for having on is to let more light in, but in the past i have had hardtops and with a SW its not really needed i guess.

the other reason i forgot to add is you can take the glass out to leave a useful hole in the roof!!!!

Its Horses for courses !

I'm happy with having no real use for one ! any advantage i could ever have with one are far out weighed by not having one !

The draft effect inside defenders caused by partial open windows or sun roofs suck hot air from the transmission tunnel through the cabin heating it up so not really cooling at all ! Nice in winter though !

Ultimately your decision ! either way keep all of us posted on your purchase !

the only advantage of keeping the roof that i can see (as light will be good in a SW) is for the opening for the odd lamping excursion.

Tim - you know it makes more £££ sense to buy new for me!

Ah !

Now you never mentioned Lamping !

Thats different ! Strictly speaking you dont necesarily need a sunroof but you will know how much safer getting a shot off is pointing down towards the ground than across the bonnet !

So if you go often and shoot from a vehicle then i would get a sun roof ! "Like i said u never mentioned Lamping"

Personally i dont or should i say cant get access to or across the land i shoot via a vehicle ! its too rocky ! and densely wooded !

The sunroof on my last but one Defender to have one smashed while I was doing 70 en route into London. The implosion resulted in quite a few bits of glass burying themselves in my bonce and also a good soaking when it started to rain a bit further down the road ...not a good day. The last Defender I had with a sunroof also had a roofrack which meant I could only crack it open a bit before it hit the rack.

I shoot and lamp too but trying to squeeze my bulk and gun through that hole in the roof while attempting to maintain a good footing on the seats / cubby box / etc ain't my idea of fun or safe shooting.

agree !

i usually shoot off the back of a double cab ! its got a rack on the cab section which is good for the bipod !

i,ve never had one smash but i have had a rack on that limited opening !

which leaves me onto my next idea, ditch the sunny and buy a roof rack,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Little vote here FOR sunroofs!
Both current and previous defenders have SRs and neither ever leaked - (you do get condensation on the inside in very cold weather though), maybe I've been lucky.
I particulary wanted a SR again because:
I like the extra light and 'airyness' in brings to the cabin,
I get a better view of tall buildings, mountains, stars etc as I'm tall and my head is in the roof(!),
And it's great to leave open on hot days when parked up, keeping the inside a little cooler (especially now the flaps have gone) when you don't want to leave the side windows open for security...

Cheers for the replies guys

am still thinking a 110 XS with rear seats which is now a NCO with sunroof and towpack

colour - who knows, undecided on that one really

was also thinkingof getting the utility pack rear sides but you cant have these with the additional rear seats so working on a way around that currently
