It might just be a chaffed hose the whining noise will be the power steering pump as its short of fluid top the reservoir up engine oil will do for testing purposes then get under the vehicle with the engine running and look at the suction hose from the power steering reservoir to the pump keeping your hands well away from any moving parts feel around the hose mine had chaffed on a clip a new length of hydraulic hose two jubilee clips and power steering fluid and it was sorted in half an hour. Don't forget to bleed the steering by turning onto full lock and holding it there for a few seconds turn left to right or right to left it matters not out and back again a few times and keep an eye on the oil level. Hopefully job sorted.

just looking at it this morning...i started her up and drove her about 120 mts then had a look in the fluid reservoir...which was full of air bubbles??? is this symptomatic of anything ?????

Great! ..just got under it in the pishing rain...looks like a leak from the pump return side..when it dryish I will have a go at tightening the union...when you get to my age you really start to covet citroen Berlingos

If, once you've tightened the union nuts, there is still a slight weeping you may be able to get away without replacing the box, I recently added a specialist conditioner which ran through the system seeking out the leak and blocked it, seems to have worked on my old 110.
I guess any specialist motor factor can supply it |

I got underneath it tightened the union...whilst there noticed rad and intercooler were turning to dust...replaced them filled reservoir started her up...turned the wheel from side to side...power steering works no leaks but......reservoir full of air bubbles masses of them so many the fluid expanded out of the overflow....
 I cant see any leaks ? is it pumpin air because its knackered....??? hoping some expert has a 10 minute fix. |

You have to turn the steering from one lock to the other slowly hold it on full lock for a few seconds and then back to the other side do that a few times if you are still getting air in the system then you have another leak on the suction side.

Suction side??? would that be the hose to the steering box from the reservoir ? sorry to be dim. K

Aye that's the one. Check the hose give it a squeeze in a few places and took for signs of oil leaking. (Obviously with the engine stopped!)
When you turn the steering to full lock is the steering pump making a noise? Uncas |

How many times have you cycled it from one lock to the other? You have to hold it on full lock each time for a short while to bleed all the sir out

for a good 10 seconds..it gets super frothy and empties out of the resevoir no sighn of heavy leakage

If it's leaking it's going somewhere. Are you topping up the reservoir after every cycle? Get someone to operate the steering while you trickle oil in to keep the reservoir topped up. The frothing is because the steering pump is cavitating (drawing in air due to the lack of oil.
