How Can JLR demonstrate new model is tough?

Well they could do no more than take a leaf from Ford's playbook:

Ford plans to race a virtually stock 2017 model.

"Ford will enter its upcoming 2017 F-150 Raptor performance truck in the grueling Best in the Desert off-road racing series — a move that conveys an utterly insane amount of confidence in a production vehicle."

Give some to western power. Give one to my foreman and another to my mate James. If they survive that they are on the right track. 200tdi Rebuild just needs dashboard, windowscreen and kenlowe fitting hopefully ready for peterborough

Only problem with that is JLR would have 20 plus support vehicles and support crew to swap out differentials, shocks, replace alternators, etc, etc and not publically acknowledge that some of the vehicles that reached the finish line were not really the same vehicles that started!

A race series with parc ferme and regulations is so much more public.

Umm...

Land rover have been supporting this for 2 years now at events with public access and parc ferme conditions. I know its the old model but it shows they have already been doing what ford is yet to do.

Hardly, the Bowlers are modified for racing well beyond the safety requirements of roll cage, bucket seats, etc:

Power: Modified to 170 bhp by Bowler Motorsport
Bowler Motorsport suspension system – including new dampers, springs roll bars and bushes
Bowler Motorsport lightweight 16″ wheels
Bowler Motorsport lightweight front bumper and sill protectors
Upgraded mud flaps and mounting system
Bowler Motorsport revised door casings
Bowler brake package
Bowler gear levers

and entered in a single make series that never attracted the number of entrants they suggested it would.

Ford are entering the Best in the Desert off-road racing series, composed of legendary races like the Mint 400, Laughlin Desert Classic, and Vegas to Reno. OK, it's America, but this is a huge race series with fantastic press coverage - there will be nowhere for Ford to hide if things go wrong.

I think ford are coming up with some pretty cool stuff at the moment.

There latest adverts in the UK are really hitting home with me and if they did proper tucks over here (instead of the ranger Rolling Eyes) I would be in one like a shot!

I think this will be a great idea and will be watching it closely to see how it does. Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

I agree, Ford is doing a good job at the moment. Their new GT racing at Le Mans almost parallel to it coming out in production is amazing.

I think the Bowler Defender Challenge was an amazing image boost for the Defender. Way too late, and not marketed as well as it deserved. Syncronised to a significant rework of the Puma Defender, with factory offered hand me downs directly from the race vehicles, would have been a great way to ring in the changes. Too late now. 1998 Tdi 90 SW,

Not a Defender, but still impresssive is the crossing of the Empty Quarter Desert with a stock RR Sport. Stock as in Dubai terms of course: with a V8, so some nice sounds, but also beautiful images. They did add a skidplate, but that was all apparently.

Greetings,

Joris

I like the Ranger! And there are people in the US saying "why can't we have a Ranger?!" Smile

Two what? Rangers or Defenders? They are running a mix of Defenders, D-max, Ranger and Hilux now. I think Rangers are only for technicians/managers now though but not sure. I can tell you it is the Defenders that do the heavy donkey work. 2011 110 USW

I have been told that the 110 we got a couple of weeks back is the last one we will ever get...they have since been ordering D-max vehicles. My 130 goes at some point December and the replacement vehicle is a D-max, so... 2011 110 USW
