Series 3 2.25 petrol blue smoke
I know this isn't really a series forum, but figured it's worth an ask.

Our series three tends to produce a (fairly significant) puff of blue smoke when you pull away having been idling (ie at lights).
To me this indicated oil passing the piston rings and being burned off when you pull away?

Also it's never been (as far as I know) altered to run on leaded fuel, is this even a problem on a 1983? I know some cars just don't care.

It's only done 24,000 miles and very good nick otherwise.

Appreciate any advice,

Cheers,

David Cheers, David

It could be worn piston rings, have you taken the plugs out and inspected them? You can tell a lot by the state of them.

It could also be the valve guide oil seals (O rings) in need of replacement.

Yep not really worried about it at all.

Any thoughts on unleaded conversion? At the moment we use additive but it's a bit of a pain, interested to know if a conversion's necessary. Cheers, David

David I ran an old Series III for two years on Unleaded 101 Octane Avgas in the Zambezi valley of Zimbabwe....worked hard and actually never missed a beat even when my Cruiser electrics were causing me nightmares!

Actually I don't as many think the blue smoke comes from oil passing through the rings (and I have reasons for this) my own speculation is that the oil ingresses through the valves by seeping in through the valve stem seals....just my own thought.

I had oil coming up the head and being blown through the rocker cover breather back into the inlet manifold. Head gasket had blown between cylinders and subsequently exhaust n inlet valves were burnt.
Maybe best to try a compression test first then work from there?

I tried additive for a while in my 5 bearing engine, then read that it wasn't required in the 5 bearing engines, I noticed no difference driving without additive, ironically I found using 97 Ron petrol made it run poorly.
