NO Coolant damage? Where is the Engine Temperatures Sensor?
Hi. I was on the highway yesterday and my coolant drained out through the same Welch (frost) Plug. I didnt realize until i saw the temp just shoot up for a second. I stopped the car and realized that there was no coolant. I drove another 20 km home, while watching the temperature guage. Does the temperature gauge only measure coolant temperature???

Not sure about the TD5, but historically temperature senders have relied upon being in contact with the coolant in order to provide a reading. If there is no coolant, they will read low regardless of the engine temperature.

I have to say that there is no way I would drive a TD5 (or indeed any other diesel engine, or any other modern engine) 20km with no coolant since I think the risk of catastrophic engine damage is extreme.

Many years ago I owned a 1966 Triumph 2000 Mk1 with a 6-cylinder petrol engine (my first car, in fact). On one occasion that lost its coolant, and it was an interesting "learning experience" for a new-ish driver. At no time did the temperature gauge show the engine overheating, all that happened was the car became more and more sluggish, a hot smell developed, and eventually the engine stalled as the pistons seized in the bores. Amazingly once it had cooled down, I had fixed the leak and replaceed the coolant, it ran as well as ever with no sign of any damage!

I would not however knowingly ever subject a diesel engine to similar treatment since diesels have always been more susceptible to damage through overheating than perol engines.

Fingers crossed that your engine is OK!

Diesels run hotter generally.

The OP might have gotten away with it, if the ambient temp is low enough, I note he is in Canada, so -25deg C with -50 wind-chill would definitely help in the engine cooling department.

I think TD5's run cooler anyway don't they, i.e. it takes ages to warm up?

Also note that the coolant would have drained to that level, so wouldn't have been completely empty.

Always a chance and well, at this stage what have you got to lose?!
