TD5 poor fuel economy
Hi I have a 90 TD5 which has developed a slight lack in power and a drop in mpg from 28mpg to 23 mpg on the same journeys week in week out I have a stage 2 bell auto tune with full width inter cooler, have replaced the maff air flow meter four times this year as they were faulty, have checked all pipe work changed air filter, fuel filters, no joy it has egr blanked off and a de cat exhaust the boost pressure is 20psi and is working correctly. Any ideas what else to check greatly appreciated thanks jago

On the bell auto website it shows you how to check the maf with a multimeter (just to rule it out again) as four in a year could mean there's a problem somewhere else that's killing the maf? Ray

at the back engine driver side if fuel regulator is leaking smell of fuel and fuel run down over starter motor and drips off bell housing

Hmm so I might have a similar issue. Car has dropped a couple of mpg no matter how gently I drive it - and its started leaving a drip where I park it, but is using no oil.

The problem is the undertray is preventing me from seeing where its coming from - and its not dripping to the point where I can actually sit and watch it. Its difficult to get my hand down under the regulator to see if fuel is coming out - but can you lose a significant amount of fuel out of it, or is it just likely to be a mild drip which isn't too critical in the short term?

Would have liked to have limped through to warmer and drier conditions to make a more thorough assessment.

Not sure if the Piper cross filter uses oil like the K&N, but that oil will kill your MAF very fast Augusto

Also worth checking the fuel filter on the outside of the chassis just behind the drivers door. Mine leaked pretty badly at one time

Have looked on the bell auto site and it said check maff reading on pin 2 with multimeter which I have done but have no reading but on pin 3 I get 1.4-1.5 so thinking maff might be at fault has anyone got any other ideas before I spend another £60?? Thanks

I would disconnect the loom going to the maf and try that for a week or so and see if theres an improvement 2004 TD5 Defender 90 xs station wagon

If you look at the FPR (rear right side of the block as sat in the drivers seat) then you'll see a suspicious clean/dieselly streak below it! Or if it was as bad as mine, when the engine is running you'll see the hose along the side of the block squirting diesel everywhere.
