Just out of interest,

I once had one on my red 90, though got a local exhaust manufacturer knock me one up. Looked badass (if you're about 20 odd)!  |

Hmmm Greeni that's a good looking truck but the exit is in front of the wheel arch and I am double that age + !
Back box rattles badly at low rpm and I thought it would look good and cure a problem at the same time? Certainly not intending to get it that deep into mud Enid  |

Awww, I missed that you said to the rear. You could find your local exhaust guy and it would not be a problem, it would easily go where you want it.
2 problems with what I had... 1: fumes easily come into the passenger window, when open. 2: at supermarket car parks, children wanted to put their hands in the exhaust, make their hands all black and then lick their hand...giving them a black tongue/face. Yep, that really happened  |

CarMan, I fitted a SS exhaust to my last Discovery that had a side exit. I actually got a rear exit tailpipe as well as the side exit. When fitted at first it had the standard rear exit pipe and was the business. Once I got round to cutting a hole in the side of the car I fitted the side exit tailpipe and immediately wished I hadn't bothered. It rattled constantly on the body. The trim piece that came with it was eventually 'launched' and I cut a large hole round about it and trimmed it with a bit of checker plate. Nowadays to save myself any hassle I'll stick with standard.

You'll probably find that replacing the back box is cheaper and less hassle than doing a side exit.

Hmmm whilst I am sure that may be true, I still quite like the idea. After all, if everyone on here left their Defenders as LR made them it'd be a quieter place on here

I have a side exit exhaust on my Puma. From the middle box back. A little more complicated than it would be on you 200Tdi, as I had to go over the rear axle. It is made of stainless and manages to use the original mounting bracket at the rear, so no welding or mods on the body/chassis. A local specialist made it, and Iīm really pleased with it. I chose the out let position, trying to get as high as possible while staying a reasonable distance from the tub.
What is also an issue with the later catalysator and DPF equipped vehicle is the exhaust temperature (up to 600° at the cat, and DPF during regeneration cycle) causing the system to expand about 8 mm. I am now making a new bezel with a few mm extra space for expansion. Not a big deal, but worth keeping in mind (and probably not relevant on the earlier models). Hope this is of help. When it heats up, the tailpipe moves about 8mm rearwards causing it to rattle. Only happens occasionally at motorway speeds. Even when starting from cold, the pipe wriggles a bit but soon settles down. Doesnīt touch the sides at all.
Thinking movement of the exhaust (when you see the rubber mounting) would be an issue, I made sure that the pipe exits the body at 90° to it. This way, most movements have little effect on the 10mm clearance to bezel. Only the expansion due to heat screwed up my good intentions. Soon to be resolved.
My advice would be make sure the pipe exits the body at 90° to it, and leave about 15 mm clearance between tailpipe and bezel.
Is it neccessary or functional? Good heavens no, but it looks good  1998 Tdi 90 SW,

Just one more thing. There is someone selling them on fleabay. I bought one a year back, thinking it would speed matters up. It is very similar to mine, exiting only a half an inch further forward.
You might need your welder to do some modifications, as it came al little too close to the chassis, but could have been made to work. Most of the bends are right, at least for a Puma.
