Snow Cowl - Are they necessary
I don't have one of the 'Snow Cowls' on my 2010 Defender 90 should I get one? We don't get mush snow here in the South or do they have another purpose that's useful?

I actually prefer the looks of the 'Hi-Force Wing Top Air Intake' would they do the same job? Question 2010 Defender 90 HT

I'm not keen on them either. They do a job but if you're not going off roading and parked under a tree in autumn i can't see the need. Lots of folks like the look. Thumbs Up

I've had a few Defenders and never had a snow cowl and never had any problems.

Do not think snow cowl. Think heater air intake cover!

One of the quirks of LR Defenders is why LR put the air intake on a flat horizontal surface whereas the engine air intake is on a vertical surface.

Picking up on Brendan's point, how hard would it be to fit an air intake on the side (where the older Defenders and Land Rovers had them) matching the current air intake, and plumb the heater up to that instead?

The Hi-Force vent and snow-cowl do entirely different things.
Having had both I can confirm the the Hi-Force vent is very effective in ensuring there is a decent air-flow through the heater (even with the motor turned off) whereas the snow-cowl (in my experience) actually reduces the air-flow but of course does prevent the grill getting blocked when it snows.
I unfortunately sold my H-Force vents (bad decision) when I bought a snow-cowl and now just fit the cowl when snow is likely and/or forecast (which isn't often around here). ONE LIFE, GET IT!

+1 for the Hi Force. The snow cowl was I believe only introduced for the military winterised versions, but civvie's soon picked up on it as being cool! Its only to prevent a build up of snow, not leaves or any other sh*te. Remove the rubber bung at its base and you'll not get any build up of crud. Use the Hi Force for a better look and adequate cool air intake.

Butcher's boy. As someone who lives in a world where it occasionally snows, my HF Vents work perfectly well. The farm has a nice overhang on the roof, but not enough to cover both sides of the Def. The way I park means the RHS is always exposed and when it dumps, gets covered. Occasionally I have to leave the whole Def out. In either instance, No issues whatsoever. I think the HF vent looks cooler, so if you really must cover, but of cardboard will suffice. Whip it off (the cardboard that is) before you drive and head off looking far, far, far cooler than those with the snow cowl. Um. Haven't you just bought one? Whistle

Is anything necessary, that people bolt on to their Defenders?? Laughing

The best mod to do to your heater intake, is to remove the rubber bung, that sits at the bottom to let water out.
It gets clogged up and doesn't work anyway. This way, water will run out and you will notice a massive difference in the lack of steaming up your windows will do Thumbs Up

Open your bonnet and rub your hand under the intake, just grab hold of the bung and pull. It's worth running some hot water in your intake to get rid of the build up of leaves/litter/spiders/grannies that have been sucked in.
