Can't get insurance

We are in the process of buying a soft top converted from a pick up hard top. We will only be using the vehicle once a week during the bee keeping season to get to our bee hives. We have spent hours on the phone and on line today trying to get insurance. The only place that will insure us is Land Rover Insurance at £1500 p.a. which is a bit steep considering the amount of use the vehicle will have. All the other insurers say that they cannot insure the vehicle as the conversion was done after the vehicle was registered with the DVLA. Has anyone else experienced this or has anyone got any suggestions?

I've had similar in the past. Try ringing NFU, they understand that a defender is a vehicle that is changed and adapted to what it needs to be. That sort of thing really doesn't bother them.

Or Footman James? Buy a copy of LRO or similar and look in the specialist insurer ads at the back. The "classic" policy specialists tend to be more flexible, but you may have a problem with it being to new for some of them.

Good luck! That's not a dent, it's a rivet. That's not a dent, it's a rivet. That's not ... oh! That is a dent!

NFU aren't always that great, I've had quotes for £3600 and then this year was £1800. Adrian Flux were £600 this year for more cover.

A lot of the classic car insurance companies won't touch it if it's less than 5 years old either.

NFU wouldn't touch me.
I quote "Maybe if you were older, or had had it for a few years already" So all I would need to do, is drive around uninsured for 3 three years, or leave it in a barn for 3 years, then they'd insure me no bother!!

A Plan were about £2k (on a standard 110 SW)

Ended up with admiral at £650 or something.

Adrian Flux have agreed to insure the vehicle at a reasonable premium. Thanks for all the advice. My husband just has to learn to drive it now, never having driven a Defender before.
