Day out in Galloway forest park between cams and new year
I am thinking of booking a day with 4x4 treks Galloway in Galloway forest park and surrounding area. Looks like they have a good setup and are off road legally and sensibly. Would anyone fancy joining us to share the fun (and cost!)

These are the dates they have free right now:29th 30th 31st December or 2nd January.

Let me know.

Is this with their own vehicles?

I've never understood this setup as why are they allowed into the forestry commission and the rest of us not?

What's more they are profiting from using forestry commission land as well!

I can only imagine there must be back handers and connections in the right places as if you approach the forestry commission and ask for permission to drive around they'd say no!

Not trying to be negative just don't understand how it works! Smile -2015 Defender 90 XS Landmark-

I think you can apply on the same basis as this company.

You will have to be prepared to fill out all the necessary forms, carry the appropriate level of insurance, and pay the access charges the FC impose.

To be fair the FC are quite good at allowing access.

They permit rallying, enduro / H&H, etc but as Supacat has said, they do require it to be organised and have the appropriate covers in place.

Around here we get a wee bit of trouble with peeps coming out of the towns etc with MX / Enduro / Trail bikes and thinking they can do as they please regardless of how much mess they make or disruption they cause. The FC are good at clamping down and any vehicles reported will be persued.

Earlier in the year a rally had to be cancelled when a couple of morons road into the forest on an MX bike and a Quad despite the marshall telling them not to. At that point it was considered too dangerous to carry on so all the work / preparation / costs were lost due to the sheer selfishness of a minority.

That's fair enough and had never thought they'd be that receptive to it being a big government organisation! Too much red tape, etc

I can appreciate the problem of nuicence access being such a vast area and can't be easy to control!

Hmmm wondering what the costs would be in getting a club organised with regular access? Whether you'd be restricted to one FC area or if it's something that could be done across their entire land mass? -2015 Defender 90 XS Landmark-

Used to live in Gatehouse of Fleet as a kid, what takes you there? Didn't appreciate it as the time, but it is a beautiful part of the world and often overlooked in the quest to get to Northern Scotland.

Spent quite a bit of time up there when based at Catterick. Stunning part of the world, beautiful to take in by Defender. Also, had a cracking fish and chips from a Chippie in Kircudbright. But f*** it's windy and rains a lot. Tail gate down on the Wolf, views out to see, epic. Thumbs Up Monsieur Le Grenadier

I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list.....

If you have kids (or even if you dont!) the chocolatre factory and Ice Cream factory are worth a visit. Choc factory take kids to make their own chocs and has a good playground.

Ice Cream factory does tours with a tasting session, also has big mountain bike tracks (several levels), go-kart (pedal type) tracks and county walks and other attractions.

Several good caravan parks which do good deals on static caravans around Gatehouse-of-Fleet.

Exactly that, the house prices are realistic as most people pass thru to get north. It's lovely up there and relatively quiet. Cheers
