Which chassis supplier did you go for and have you had any problems with it? Looking to do the same this summer so just trying to figure out the best option.

Bolting new stuff on was definitely the best part. It felt really good getting rid of the old chassis though and especially ripping that plate off the back. If I'd known more I'd have probably given it a better check over before buying, but at that point I knew nothing about defenders. The old one really was in rough shape though - more patch than original. You could push your finger straight through the metal in some places.

The new chassis is indeed from Richards. There are good and bad reviews for both Richards and Marsland so it was quite difficult to make a decision. I also found another company called Shielder but there weren't enough reviews of them either way to really consider them an option. In the end it just came down to wanting to keep the correct crossmember for the year so I went with Richards.

I've got no complaints about their service. I was anxious because just a week or so before it was due to arrive I read donmacn's post on here about his chassis and the problems with it. However, they said 4-6 weeks and it was here in 4. They called a few days before to say it would arrive at 8am and at 7:30 on the day a bloke turned up with 3 on a hiab - mine, a 110 TD5 and a 90 N/A. No complaints about the quality, although I can't confess to having much experience of galvanising. I really can't say I've had anything but a good experience so far.

I do expect to have a bit of a job getting the body all lined back up but I think a bit of deformation is to be expected given the galving process. Comparing to the old chassis there's one obvious difference - the holes for the chassis loom are on the inside and the outside, where on the original they are only on the inside. I'd guess this is just so they don't have to make a left and right but can just use the same one for both.

I feel like I've been neglecting my old Defender lately because I haven't really had time to do much work. However, since it's just gone the year anniversary of taking it off the road for a few weeks to do a chassis swap, I thought it'd be nice to post a brief update.

I got a new loom from Autosparks so threaded that through the chassis. What an absolute nightmare. I ended up buying a cheapo usb drain camera from Amazon and using that to see inside. If I hadn't, I'm not sure how I would have managed it. Even being able to see what I was doing it still took me about 2 or 3 hours. When I managed to grab hold of it from the other end I felt both relief and large amount of back pain.

Next up, new brake lines at the back.

The new radiator arrived so that went on too.

Right now, the brake callipers need attention which is job that I'm half way through.

Then wire brush and paint all the rusty looking bits. The fuel filler is beyond salvage so I have a new one of those to go on.

It's getting close to the body going back on now so I've been taking looking at that. The only real thing that's worrying me is this support but I can't seem to find any available to buy so I'm not sure what I'll do about it yet. It looks like it'd be fairly easy for someone with fabrication skills to knock up, but sadly that's not me.

That 'support' is actually one of the mounts for the rear seat belts and doesn't support the body at all. It can be removed and installed with the body in place, too. Darren

Looking more like car now Thumbs Up yeah wiring is fun!! I have changed a full car loom on a rover metro years ago and it took me the best part of 3 to 4 hours, Then I had the fun of checking to see if it all worked. Thumbs Up

Ah good to know that they can be replaced in situ then, so it shouldn't hold me up if I can't get hold of replacements before the body goes back on.

I did do the timing belt and also the serpentine belt before the radiator went back on, just forgot to mention it. I haven't wired anything up yet, just threaded the loom through the chassis, so I still have that fun to come.

Landy Andy, do you know if the 90 and 110 are the same? If so and you're looking to sell then I'd be interested in them.

A bit of a milestone achieved this past weekend.

Started out just repainting a few bits that needed it.

Then rolled it out for a bit of admiration and photo documentation.

Here's the body which has been sitting in the garage for over a year now. I've got replacement footwells because these aren't looking too good. I've poked holes through them in a couple of places.

Got the chassis in position as much as we could.

Then transferred the ratchet straps to the engine crane and removed the front bar support in order to let us roll the chassis under the body completely and then be able to lower it.

Great stuff!! Its a breath of fresh air when you get a project back on its wheels. Me and my dad spent hours and hours on an engine conversion. The best part was when it fired into life for us for the 1st time! I wont go into the dramas we had, But that was due to someone else. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back
