Canada 1984 Defender 110 300 Tdi SW Alveston Red
Yet another noise
So i have a funny noise coming from what seems like the right front

Its almost like a mudflap or something hitting the wheel or propshaft. It winds up louder at about 40km/h and up

It is more noticable when coasting or not accelerating. In out out of gear it makes the noise

It still makes the noise when coasting at 40km/h when I turned off the engine. Out of gear. And coasted to a stop

Tapping the brakes makes no difference

I have checked all fluids (diffs. Swivels, gearbox, transfer box). Greased propshatfs. Checked for something rubbing

I even took off the front propshaft tonight and checked for play in the transfer case output. (No play)

I changed the front pinion seal in the front diff as it was leaking. Thought it might be a busted seal. But the noise is still there

Any thougt or opions on things to check? I am a bit stumped

Best to start simple and jack the front up and give the wheels a good pull around to see if anything feels loose (wheel bearing , steering joints, swivel etc). Then spin the wheel to see if you can feel anything. If you've got aggressive tyres check the tread area incase you've picked up something. As previously said check for stones etc in the brakes and check wheel nuts are tight. 2003 Defender TD5 Hardtop (current - work in progress)

Thanks for the quick replys

Both wheels have been up in the air and off.

No play in the bearings when pulling on the wheel
No odd noises when spinning the wheels when jacked up
The noise sounds like something like a blown bearing or shaft

My fist guess hearing it was the pinion seal was broken and rubbing on the diff output. But that was crossed off

Both front brake pads do drag a little but can spin
How freely should the wheels spin (maybe the bearing are binding a bit?)
How else can I check the wheel bearing if there is no play in the wheel

Sounds a bit like a what-what-what-what, or whit-whit-whit-whit, said really quickly over and over. This would increase and decrease in line with the speed regardless of engine on or off, clutch in or out, brakes on or off.

I even checked to see if I had a loose mudflap.

I didn't' actually check for stones in the tire, - will try that tonight along with swapping wheels around to see if the noise moves

Oh - and through all of this I have now found a small hole in the frame inside the wheel well behind the brake hose fixing point Sad

+1 for a stone or other solid object stuck in the tyre based on your what what what / whit whit whit description.

Hopefully an easy fix, although if it's a great big nail or screw, best to leave it in until you can get to the tyre repair shop.

Had a similar noise on my car last year and foolishly pulled out the washer headed roofing nail.
Then the hissing began Embarassed

Well I went for the easy ones first

No stones in the tire or stuck in the pads
Swapped tires (no change)
Checked bearing - couldn't actually get the lock nut off !!! but re greased, it seemed fine from spinning
Checked pads as they were dragging a bit

Took it out for a spin, since I don't have my cubby box back in I can access above the transfer box. I took this video.

Really seems to me to be either the transfer box, or the tranny. Much more prevalent when the power is off

As much as I enjoy spending time working on my truck I much more enjoy driving it......

Is your handbrake drum tight? My transferbox output flange was a little loose and that made a similar noise. Roel

No chance to work on the truck last night.

I will check the handbrake drum and contents as my next step, then the transfer box output.

I tried shifting it into 4L the night before, although I couldn't really get up much speed I think the noise went away....

One of the guys at work listened to the noise and he said the answer is quite simple. There is actually someone playing the drums in my transfer box / gear box!

So after driving with both the front and rear propshafts installed I isolated the noise to the tranny. My mechanic friend thinks it is the reverse idler gear. Not wanting to wade into a rebuild I was able to fine a used R380 tranny and LT230 for Can$300 which is only about 200pounds. I had to do a lot of swapping little bits here and there but it was pretty straight forward. Just time consuming with only me working on it

The old transfer box always felt under geared. Having to rev really high in 2 to not get bogged down in 3rd

Although the speedo is now reading 10km to high at only 60-70km/h

The used rebuilt transfer box looks like it is in excellent conditions. I bought new output seals but the ones in it looked brand new

Little bit of homemade tool bodgery that worked really well

This brass ring was needed on the original transfer box. The rebuilt one has a flange built into it that I think renders this piece redundant as it would not go in without binding. No leaking whatsoever
