Forward Facing lock and fold Rear Seats for a Defender 90

Hi guys,
Ive just recently bought a pair of forward facing locks and fold rear seats for a defender 90 hardtop and was wondering if any of you know the legality of fitting these.

I intend to fit them correctly using load spreading plates and the correct seatbelt and brackets from exmoor trim but am wondering if i need to put the rear side windows in or if can leave these out?

Also is it difficult to get the tax book changed to saying its a four seater now and does this need an inspection or re-MOT?

And finally, how difficult is it to get the insurance to cover the extra seats? Has anyone had any trouble with them?

if they are genuine defender rear seats.. they are a lot of work to install; you have to cut the arches to properly do it...

Insurance company would probably need to see a certificate of conformity, to show they have been professionally installed and tested to a standard. Cheers Simon

I replaced the whole rear tub on my 90 to fit these seats. Hardest part was finding the rear tub though

Thanks guys. Its not official land rover seats so no need to do any adjustments to tub just bolt in place

ive just emailed department of transport to see what sort of inspection i would need afterwards but the insurance have been quite good saying that if get seats on v5 after inspection it should only increase premium by £85.

hopefully will get them fitted next weekend

Any more news on your planned fitting of these seats? I'm considering the same mod in my 2010 hard top. I might even just fit one, to the near side rear. Have you gone for the Exmoor Trim lock & fold?

Heard back from Department of Transport and they basically say as long as the vehicle is safe it is fine however they advise using forward facing seats with three point inertia seatbelt and preferably having these fitted by a trained mechanic however this is not compulsory. they also advised having the seatbelt inspected (best way is probably at the next MOT)

As long as the load area can still be used it is still classed as a commercial vehicle so shouldn't be an increase in tax (if using fold up seats no problems with this)

TBH it seems a lot less hassle than I had firs thought. As i have the third party forward facing seats rather than the actual Land Rover Defender ones it means no cutting away of body just bolt straight in and seatbelt kit bolts in.

Just need to get back in touch with DVLA now to see how I would go about changing the V5 to say 4 seater to ensure paperwork all in order for insurance company

If anyone is wanting the guidelines from Department of Transport for converting a van to carry rear passengers PM me as i don't know how to upload attachments onto the forum

A friend of mine converted his Disco 4 Commercial to a 4 seater. To ensure his Insurance Co were happy he sent it for a new MOT test. Considering the low cost of the test its probably not a bad idea regardless.

I'd be interested to know which manufacturer's seats you are using? 2015 90 Hard Top
1998 90 300Tdi - chuffed to have another one
2013 Freelander 2 - for posher trips to the shop
1996 300 Tdi 90 Hard Top - sold 19th June 2020 - miss it, loved it
2016 90 Hard Top - demolished Nov 2019 by young driver 3.5 times over the drug limit
2010 90 Hard Top - now sold
Ex mil 90 - now sold
