Engaging Diff-Lock
The diff-lock selector lever on my new 110 is very vague in its operation, engaging feels fairly positive but when disengaging it doesn't go fully across to the right, it springs back to an almost centre position like the main gearstick.

Are they all like this or could this be a fault? I have noticed that if I engage diff-lock whilst travelling straight forward then straight away disengage, the light stays on as though there is some wind up so I am wondering if this issue could be causing the noise from the transmission and box? ie is my diff-lock sticking on? Andy

Mine is much the same. Sometimes it's like flicking a switch on and off, other times it's like stirring a spoon in porridge. Always seems to work though. Occasionally (last week-end for example) the light does take a little while to go off. I doubt whether there was any wind-up since all the driving leading up to where I disengaged it was on loose gravel. 2007 Defender 110

Most Defender transfer boxs feel vague at best, the diff light will invariably stay on after you have disengaed it, especially if you are on tarmac, normally goes off when you change gear, or go into reverse, it will also go out straight away if it feels like it, it's a Defender Very Happy If you really want to get the light off put 2 wheels on grass or mud and it will go off straight away as the resistance of tarmac keeps the slightest tension in the diff, whereas mud or grass will release it.

My first proper off-roader toy was a V8 90 CSW with Santana box, I gave it death every weekend and drove it to work Monday to Friday, sold it after 3 years to a mate who converted it to a Truck Cab trialler and it is still going strong, it also had the better half shafts and Salisbury diffs, but the transfer box was standard.

Don't worry mate, I know you had a shocking experience with your last one, but give it a chance, I am with you on the roof alignment, that doesn't look right, and there are issues with the gearboxes, the transfer boxes are the same as the 200, 300 and TD5's according to my local dealers. BB, not worried really, just trying to pre-empt the inevitable dealer fob off.

All I want is to buy a Defender get in and drive it on and off road. Something is causing the racket from the transmission, if i can point the dealer in the right direction there is half a chance that they can fix it Rolling Eyes

I don't want to spend £28k on a motor then spend half the time trying to get faults sorted. Andy

I've had to do that with most of the Defenders & pre Defender coilers I've owned.

Me too, standard way to remove wind-up. One turn of the wheel to the right and reverse always clears it. Andy
