Hi all,
Happy as I am bolting stuff to the car, I've come un-stuck with my spot light wiring. I'm got the Genuine LR kit STC53208 but the instructions appear to be tailored to a TD5. (PDF first result when googling the part number - don't know how to attach it here!) I've got loads of questions being an electrical simpleton, please bear with me! - Firstly, is it possible to fit this kit to a 2.2 Puma? - Most spot light kits on ebay (like this one: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/181294009639?_tr...BIDX%3AIT) appear to have power from battery, a fuse somewhere, trigger from the headlight connector & ground. But does the OEM LR kit work the same way as there is no mention of triggering the switch from the headlight? - What are the wires going to the back of the dials doing? - On an 16MY XS there is no spare switch position, any suggestions for switch position without cutting the main dash? Yes is is entirely possible to fit to a Puma, they are not that different as you only need a main trigger, ground and illumination for the switch, and ground and 12V in for the relay. These are all still available on a Puma, and in the same places 
It is effectively wired the same as a "generic kit". The wire going to the back of the warning panel is picking up a feed for the main beam (uses the wire for the main beam warning). For the switch connector: Connect the red/yellow to a red/orange from an existing switch (illumination) Connect the black to a black from an existing switch (ground) It should be the same or very similar to the PDF. Are you fitting roof lights or front mounted?

The wiring is a bit different, the Td5 kit gets to the switch on the dash from the engine bay (steps 29-32) whereas the Puma kits route from the seatbox and across the gearbox tunnel (steps 47-57 for VPLDV0103).
You might, therefore, have to extend a few wires to suit the Puma routing, or unwrap the loom and re-wrap, or both. You could buy VPLDV0103, but that is a complete kit with the lamps at £300, which I assume you don't want   There isn't a loom-only option, only complete with lamps.

Thinking some more, another option might be to make/have made a replacement seatbox to dash loom section, and not use the Td5 bit which wants to go through the bulkhead.
It's only 3 wires - main beam feed from cluster, spot light relay earth path from switch and spot light indicator to switch. 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

I'll leave this one to Martin as it sounds to me like he has been there and done that.
Avoids confusion. I just mentioned where as roof lights need to be legally switched where as front mounted can be main beam switched with out interior switches being fitted. As it sounds like you have a switch and associated harness you may as well use it anyway even if it only isolates them. |

I did the same...installed using the "standard" loom
The other "issue" (or challenge!) I found was that it's not easy to connect the negative lead to the battery, So I extended the lead, and connected it to the point where the large chunky negative cable from the battery meets the chassis. Been fine Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) |

You can run the wires through the bulkhead - i did - took a bit of doing but possible
I ran 2 wires through, or maybe 3, the premade loom might be a challenge granted 
As for the roof lights having to be switched themselves, not on mainbeam - i think this is a myth - i remember this being around back in the day and no one could find anything that said it, but loads of examples where it wasnt covered (and lorry's with their roof lights on main beam). My v8 went through its MOT fine wired up to main beam. Mike |

I think it's just down to some wanting wiring to be how they think it should be hence a legal requirement. (Fictional one lol )
With switching you do have independence of front lights to roof lights rather than all on of all off. |

I had the defender spot lights on switch 2, but it became a real pain to turn them on or off if im honest Mike

Yep, or used, but you couldn't get to them in time so occasionally dazzled people etc, especially if you had main beam on and it was a country road.
I would probably wire a de-link switch maybe On-Off-On to have on with mainbeam, off and on on their own if i was to do it again. Mike |

Yes, that'd work perfect but there isn't an OE solution that I am aware of.
I rarely can use my spots due to on-coming traffic |

no it would be self wired, but piece of cake to do, you could use the OE switch (well i cant because it T/C now) Mike
