Location of spring colour codes
I think my Defender has stiffer springs than I want, and to check that I've been looking for the colour codes on my current springs. I've been looking for two vertical stripes of colour down the spring somewhere, but I can't find what I'm looking for.

1) is that the correct thing to be looking for? Are there any suggestions on what I might be doing wrong? I've cleaned them and gone all around them with my hands. There don't seem to be any markings.

2) is there any other way of telling what sort of springs they might be? They're just black!

3) are there any after market springs that are just black? It's entirely possible that something different was fitted as it seems to have been worked hard in a previous life and had the mother of all roof boxes on it.

Yes, that's the information I'm trying to find, I just can't find the actual colour codes on the springs I've already got!

On mine, the colours are just daubed down the length of the spring. Nothing very pretty, but quite obvious on new/clean springs. If they are very muddy or rusty you might struggle to see them (if they are that old they have probably gone soft anyway...!).

cheers

15' Puma's have springs that are marked the same in the front and different on the back.
So a front match and rear match.
They are not handed left or right.

Early Pumas were handed I believe but mine is running aftermarket springs anyway which I am to change to genuine so it's pointless...

^^^ I think it also differs if you have a HT or CSW. Then there are HD springs you can order for the HT (which may be the same as the CSW std springs).

Sounds like Cupboard has aftermarket springs, there is a chart somewhere on here that gives you the length and rating of the springs, so I guess you could measure them...? The chart also includes some aftermarket springs (like OME).

cheers

simon

EDIT: Here's a link to a chart with spring lengths and llbs ratings http://www.red90.ca/rovers/springinfo.html

Hmm.
Those pictures make the markings look nice and obvious. Mine aren't.

However in Def90's post on the other thread, they're only marked in one place and it's entirely possible I've missed something like that.

I think I might get it in the workshop tomorrow and take a wheel off to get a better look, if I still can't find anything then I'll order some normal ones and swap them over.

Thanks for the help Thumbs Up

Edit: just thinking, I'm sure when I asked what "standard" springs were a month or so ago someone posted a different table that had the differences between a 110 HT, CSW, USW and 5 seat CSW.

Edit 2: here we go:

Here's a couple of links to Spring rates. Also what tyre pressure are you running on the rear? Might be too high...

Finally had some time in the workshop, and I found the colours Smile

I'm not surprised I couldn't find them before.

Presumably I want to change to white/green/green.

So!

I am now very confused as my front driver side spring has a colour combo that is not on the list!

Red/Green/Yellow!

Are these HD springs?

I do have vented front disks too!

Does anyone know please!

Hi YOLO110

I believe that's a Red/Green/Orange paint code on that spring !

Late model 90 Front passenger side on a RHD vehicle.

The HD refers to the rear spring rates.

Ok... it could indeed be orange?

But it is on the drivers side on a RHD vehicle!??!

Unless being 'Downunder' also means swapping sides too! Laughing

Confused by this... IT would seem it does have HD springs, the vented disks also support this?

Hi YOLO110

Just taken a look at my 2015my RHD 90 XS and it appears to have

Red/Green/Orange front springs on both sides !

What spring paint code do you have fitted to your passenger side ?

There is another source of spring colour coding which gives a whole heap more information at Red90.ca;

Just for info fella's ...
All these 'spring guides' were written long before the puma came about, so the colour codes listed do not apply to puma models Surprised

Puma springs are not 'handed' [although on early models they were, a trend soon discontinued as It served no purpose], It's the same colour code for both springs on each axle. Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant.
