Pinking Puma
Hi Guys
I think I might have a problem with my Puma Defender 90 its a 2011 TDCI I have had I back to the dealers who tell me its normal for a defender to sound like it, and as I have got no experience with these engines I just want to make sure they aren't having one over on me.

The issue is the engine sounds rattly almost like its pinking under certain conditions ie 4th gear between 1.5 and 2000 revs accelerating about 2/3 pedal .
It will do it in other rev load conditions as well but it consistently does it in 4th at those revs.

So if anyone has a 61 plate 2.2 does yours "pink" at 1.5 to 2000 revs under moderate load ??
I need to bottom this out while it is still under warranty, so any input would be good
Cheers guys

My 14MY 2.2 110 does this too, found it unnerving to begin with but have gotten used to it. Thumbs Up 2014 110 2.2TDCi XS Station wagon

Cheers thanks for that I was hoping it was a common thing, I have had issues with dealers before saying its normal when a head gasket had gone !!!!

If its cold weather mine is especially rattly from low rpms. It could be a faulty vcv if you are experiencing higher mpg. We have the same problem on Peugeot boxers with the puma.

Thanks Grenadier, I have been keeping an eye on it and I'm still getting 330-360 miles per tank, but I'm aware of the VCV issues Confused 2014 110 2.2TDCi XS Station wagon

have you ever tried using some of the premium diesel ie Esso Supreme etc?
might be worth a try. also are you 100% sure it's coming from the engine?

- I'm still not sure where my rattle comes from but I'm more inclined to think it's transfer box area - but like I say years on and I'm still unsure Embarassed

Use BP Ultimate and if I can't get that I have 2SO in the car to add to the regular fuel. The noise is like a detonation pinking, the courtesy Defenders and the hire 110 I had all made the same kind of noise, makes me think that its a normal trait.

Noting worse than an untamed rattle, you become tuned into it and you end up thinking it's worse than it really is Thumbs Up 2014 110 2.2TDCi XS Station wagon

couldn't agree more. I still can't get my head round the fact that its intermittent thou.

I was virtually down to tickover in 6th today all the way back up to cruising and no rattles but that's not always the case - it's had me scratching my heading for so long there's a 1" deep grove in the top of my head now?

I had this pinking on my 2010 Defender 110, but using BP Ultimate has cured it, made the EGR valve a lot quieter at shut down and increased my MPG, well worth the extra 10p or so a litre! 2010 Defender 110 Station Wagon, Santorini Black.

Yep tried be ultimate, redex, 2 stroke oil etc and although the 2so was great none of it has worked as well overall as tightening up my loose battery connection. Mr. Green

Another happy day Thumbs Up

Have the very same issue on my 2011 2.4 puma 110.
I can pull from low down and no sound but at around 1500rpm or less in 5th if I very slightly try to accelerate it knocks like crazy if I back off to a neutral throttle it goes. Once the speed has increased about 10mph nothing more! The same happens in 4th at around 1000rpm. I thought it might be some type of injector knock as I'm not familliar with the common rail diesels. I have been monitoring it for the last couple of weeks trying to find a pattern. When I first became aware of it I though it sounded like a big end on it's way out and had a panic Big Cry
At low revs but higher speed it doesn't happen, only seems to be at around 25mph in fourth and 30mph in fifth.
Could it be something in the way they are mapped? I would have expected that sort of noise low down when the anti stall kicks in but that's as smooth as silk and dead quiet!
Glad I'm not the only sufferer, I'm sure someone will have the definitive answer Thumbs Up
