What kind of cheap half as..........
Moron thought it was a great idea to make part of the main power loom so short and tight that it can't help itself but rub through it's insulation and short out on the starter solenoid and why having made this decision would said moron then hide this critical lack of thought behind the turbo inlet hose so that there's no chance of seeing and therefore avoiding the problem by a bit of logical thought?

You can see where this is going can't you...

My ruddy car caught on actual FIRE today. In the middle of a street half way through delivering a trailer of logs to a mate it switched itself off and wouldn't restart, smoke coming out of the bonnet, popped it open and FLAMES!!!!! Put it out and tried to start it and it took, ok the warning for electric issues was permanently on but it was able to get off the street to do the job and under close supervision made it home. I guess while they got some of the details wrong at least they made these old 300's tough. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

Shocked Thats scary.

Sounds like you had a lucky escape!

My second biggest fear after Theft is fire. 23 years of wires rubbing around underneath Shocked

Hope any damage is easily repaired! Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

Yeah once I got it home and the turbo pipe off, it was an easy fix. But I think the rest of the loom is in for a full inspection as soon as possible. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

When my 300TDi was new the engine harness was rubbing on the block and after a couple of years I started to get the charge light glowing at odd times yet the voltmeter showed good charge. Eventually discovered what it was, bought a new harness but routed it differently. On inspection the old one was about to combust, all the insulation had gone in the affected area, some of the strands were gone and it was only one step away from making permanent contact. ONE LIFE, GET IT!

Where did you get the new harness from assuming that it was fairly recently as so far I'm not having much luck finding a replacement, should I need one. Or rather I ain't spending 1200 quid on one from the dealer. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

Lambert, see if autosparks can help with one ? I got a loom for my series from them and it was excellent - I'm not sure if they do newer stuff, but worth checking.

The engine loom off a disco 300 will fit I am pretty sure. TBH it would not cost much more than £20 in wire and crimps to make your own, complete engine loom from scratch.

About 2-Years ago, bought a genuine loom from Keith Gott for about £70, not certain if he still has them in stock but it is only a phone call.
I think he had a lot of NOS 300TDi conversion parts from the LRGP re-power kits that used to be available (my engine / gearbox was supplied & fitted by a dealer as one of these kits). ONE LIFE, GET IT!

Dug out the invoice.
June 2013, part number PRC4021, price £52.50 + VAT.

A quick search on that part number comes up with a current price (from various dealers) of £157 + VAT. ONE LIFE, GET IT!
